Re: Question from new member

So, to re-frame the original question: is it possible/advisable to attempt traversal of a section of grade 5 of whitewater in a raft with little or no experience, but in the context of a commercial operation overseen by an experienced guide? Yes, absolutely! Also, no matter where in the world you d...

Re: New rules for driving in France

Information on areas etc here: https://www.crit-air.fr/en/information-about-the-critair-vignette/french-environmental-zones-zcr/french-environmental-zones.html#c29520 Well, in that case it looks like (in theory) you do need the sticker to drive through Grenoble... even on the toll road. That said, ...

Re: New rules for driving in France

That map seems to contain old data – i.e. it claims you don’t need one of those stickers unless a “pollution event” is ongoing. Although if the information about the area given in that map is correct, if travelling to Briancon, you are very likely to be travelling through the area in Grenoble where ...

Re: New rules for driving in France

When you say in the city, I presume this is only relevant if you actually want to go in and do a little sightseeing? It won't affect the normal route down to briancon for instance? Yeah, if you're steaming through on the Autoroute, i can't imagine it'd be an issue... Just if you pick someone up fro...

New rules for driving in France

Whilst paying my tolls for my Easter trip, I came across the following, which may be of use if you're planning an Alps trip: New Law for Driving in France - Deadline date 31st March 2017 The French government have launched a new scheme for all cars driving in Paris and other French cities (currently...

Re: Question from new member

This is a few years old, but popped up on Facebook recently. Very relevant (if you're wanting to kayak grade 5 anyway), and worth a read. http://www.sitezed.com/pushing-it/ Rafting grade 5 is a different beast, but as has been mentioned above, you’d be hard pushed to find any (in this country at lea...

Re: Riverapp abroad - does it show maps?

No need. I found them before, they don’t help!

Maybe I should re-phrase the question:

You’re driving south through France and you’re about an hour out from the foothills of the Pyrenees. What river are you going to head to first for some guaranteed (level wise) whitewater.

Pyrenees advice

The only time I've paddled in the Pyrenees is in Sort in the late 90's on a family holiday. I know nothing else about it. I have just acquired the 17 year old(!) guidebook. Has anyone been before, and can you recommend some higher grade rivers (or just any good rivers), that will be worth checking o...

Riverapp abroad - does it show maps?

Many people recommend Riverapp alongside/over Rainchasers for UK boating. I’m off to the Pyrenees (I think) over Easter, and since Riverapp has French/Spanish river levels too, I thought I’d download it. However, I can’t find a map view of all the rivers on it (something like the map component of th...

It's an interesting, if scary read. Brings us back to the age-old question of why it is that BC don't do anything to collate or analyse accidents or near misses. There's some good discussion about it from a few years ago here: https://www.ukriversguidebook.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=109986 Int...

Once had to be over in the east of the country by midday/1pm for some family do, but it had rained for the first time in a while and I was convinced that Fairy Glen would be running. I managed to persuade a couple of (more local) guys to meet me at the put-in by 6.30am. Got up at 4am, 2hr drive to n...

Video Time Trial Series

I discovered this page the other day. It seems the idea is to create an informal race series whereby people can race each other “virtually” via their go-pro footage. https://facebook.com/APHTTRace/ Each month the organisers set up a few race sections around the country (eddy to eddy / seal launch to...

Re: Soft Roof Bars, How many boats

They did. Unfortunately we were there for 4 weeks, and the guys with that car were only there for 3. Whilst they got away with returning the car during a rainstorm, we were quizzed about it a week later when we returned the other two. That trip was particularly hard on our hire cars. We succeeded in...

Re: Soft Roof Bars, How many boats

On a month long trip to BC, we got three hire cars. Managed to find proper roof racks for two, but only an inflatable for the last one. It worked admirably (4 creek boats), but the roof of the car was a mess by the end of the trip. Dirt had got under the racks, and as the racks had moved back and fo...

Re: grade 2/3 rivers

Anything here fit the bill? http://rainchasers.com/region/dartmoor http://rainchasers.com/region/south-west Guess the problem is that most grade 2/3 sections tend to be reasonably long, therefore not really feasible to walk up for another go. I suppose you could find a river with a suitable take-out...

Oof, some clear communication to the ‘masses’ (of recreational/ww boaters – if UKRGB counts as that anymore).

Yeah, morsey has the right answer! There's a few thousand tonnes of tarmac put down in glen etive, plus, as you say, a number of telegraph/electricity pylons. Yep I have binned off insure and go. Kayak cover was naff. Insure and Go do however give cover on G4 w/w kayaking in the general terms (unlike many other insurers).
