Re: River Tavy clean-up

Graham and Mark This could be a spectacular own goal for the angling community. I think all "normal" folk would accept that what we did and achieved was a very worthwhile project , and by objecting to it they will only draw attention to the absolute hypocrisy of their stance in the eyes of the wider...

Re: Kayaking when you live in London - help?!

Katie Finding accommodation in London which suits both your lifestyle and your wallet can be challenging. You will probably need to make compromises between proximity to transport links and price. When you have found the right area , look around for quirky places that might just have a garden shed o...

Chris As one of the coached , as opposed to the coaches, I can relate to several of the aspects of your ideas, especially the "skewed inverted U" (performances going off the cliff when tired) and will try to use the understanding of the model to improve my own performnces. As a coach of beginners , ...

Re: Whitewater in Kent

Andy I am afraid that Kent is really quite flat and this does not lend itself to providing much in the way of white water. There are weir pools that you can play in on the River Medway (most notably at Yalding) , and also probably others elsewhere. White Water Action Medway (usually known as WAM) ar...

I am pretty sure that Kent Canoes near Wrotham do hires of open boats , but I don't know if they will drop them off for you. Here is their website http://www.kentcanoes.co.uk/.

Re: Club membership fees

For us it is £35 pa for adults and £15 for youth/students. We make no charge for borrowing boats and gear (but expect polo players to have their own boats by the time they are in Div 3) Pool sessions £5 , Lake sessions free. All trips run by volunteer coaches and are run at cost. Courses run by volu...

Re: DW 2012

Agreed 100% Hackworth The worst issue we came across was a female crew (in gold lame leggings!) who put their boat in at the one feasible get on at Fobney and then vanished for more than 2 minutes for a loo stop. If this ever happens again I will be sorely tempted to push their boat out into mid str...

Re: DW 2012

Yes that one was really tough, much worse than last year. Cold, and wet in the night, almost zero flows anywhere, and many very crowded portages, with lead crews not being over-considerate to those following at difficult get-ins like Fobney. My team (team Pink, Eliza!) fared OK on the canal despite ...

You are certainly right about portages , I have been trying to instill a portage discipline into my first time crew who managed 6h 09m on D yesterday. They kept being overtaken at each one, and then fighting hard to overtake all over again, they found it quite disheartening. I think this confirms th...

Re: River Medway Clean Up

Tony Thank you for your good wishes, we are hoping for a good turnout and some publicity our sport. Many clubs still use the weir pool at Yalding to teach newbies early moving water skills. Not many paddle from Penshurst , partly due to access issues , and partly because there is rarely any water in...

River Medway Clean Up

Following the great success of Mark Allen and friends on the River Dart and no doubt many other groups elsewhere, the River Medway Paddlers Group has initiated a clean up weekend for paddlers to help with doing the same on the stretch between Tonbridge and Allington. Please post here if you would li...

How about a shoulder harness to help spread the weight of the boat and kit and make it easier to carry.

From Google maps the only bridge I can ...

Re: which polo paddle??

Hannah Much depends upon how serious you are going to be about polo. If you want to play seriously at national division 3 and above you will start to need some good equipment, if you just want to play more socially at club level then you dont need to think above a more basic level. If you are going ...

Re: boat bags...

Another vote for Canyon Gear.
They tailor make the bag to the boat , so it fits well , they will also embroider your name on the outside giving additional identification data.
I bought one for a polo boat , and it has been great and stood up to all kinds of abuse.
