Re: DofE Silver Options

If you want something reasonable local , try the River Wey in Surrey . You can go from Godalming to the Thames, in fairly nice chunks, and Wey Kayak Club at Guildford are super helpful and co-operative. If you are short on distance you can also do some mileage on the Basingstoke Canal. There are not...

Re: Beginners Lesson Plans

I'm with Kate on this one. I don't teach sweep turning early on (yes I know it is a skill that can be easily mastered and therefore give confidence) , but I do teach a "correction stroke" (or half sweep) which enables newbies to get themselves back onto track fairly easily. Like Kate I try not to sh...

Re: New Camping Cabins on the River Medway in Kent

These are great and I can see them being utilised by DoE expeditions quite a lot. I only wish that other EA areas spent as much time (and money?) as you have upgrading their facilities on other rivers that you have on the Medway. It is now a very paddlesport friendly river.

Had a look at the get on on Friday night , but with only 3 and a quarter showing on the gauge , we decided to leave it for another day.

We did like the look of the start, but darkness stopped inspecting any further stretches.

Thanks for writing up the guide Mark.

Many thanks for this Mark,

If there is water I will try it this weekend . We have a club trip based at Simonsbath, so it is actually closer than the (in)famous Barle, is it a river for small groups , or could we get a larger party down (broken down into smaller groups).

Re: River Webburn - Ponsworthy to Dart Confluence

The large tree just above the bridge near the confluence with the Dart has been removed and there has been a certain amount of gardening done in the 400 metres above this. We paddled the river on Saturday (Dart 6 inches above slab), and Sunday (2inches above slab) by walking and carrying boats up ri...

Re: River East Dart - Postbridge to Dartmeet

Ran this with a small group of 5 on Saturday , when the Upper Dart was on "huge". All rocks were covered at Postbridge , and most at Dartmeet. The first kilometer is still the most awkward, after the barbed wire (now a single strand which can be raised to a safe level river right) followed by the st...

Mark Depending how far down you are going: Lucksall Camp Site near Mordiford (downstream from Hereford) Welsh Bicknor Youth Hostel is riverside choice. Nice location in summer , not been in winter, very helpful warden who is/was a boater. There are several choices around Symmonds Yat, mainly pubs, b...

Finally got to run the river with my boat yesterday! The EA on-line gauge was 0.38 which again matched the gauging marker at Llangenny weir. At this level is was Grade 2+/3 but a really enjoyable paddle for a small group. The strand of barbed wire was still in place about 100m below Cwm Bridge get i...

We ran this section on Saturday in 3 discreet groups of 5 in low/medium water. Although the Tawe Angling Association "No Canoeing" notice abounded , we did not encounter any hassle . We recently bought a Duo to help a guy with a rare condition which affected one of his arms and gave him a day out at Symonds Yat. There must be other cases. Yes there are many indeed. The centre where I work keeps one Duo for paddlers who are unable to cope solo. Last week I paddled in the rear , ...

It is certainly luxurious , but all the basic facilities are there except perhaps a drying room. The kitchen is good. http://www.joes...

Hi Jason I have found the Millbrook webcam , but there is not enough back data to know what the level was on Nov 25th. The river was certainly high, but perhaps not as high as the 0.88 in September 2012. The tow back on the Llangenny weir was at least 2 boat lengths, but those that paddled the botto...
