Re: Rescue Me Balloon

I really like this idea! Crucial for our use is that it needs an as simple as possible operation (like lighting a flare).
Jim wrote:is the ballon big enough to lift a radar reflector?
The reflectors are already foreseen and I think this is the reason why the baloon is not round but has a diamond shape.

Re: My long way to the roll (and still going)

I can absolutely recommend the "this is the roll" DVD. I used it to drastically improve my own roll. You don't have to be a greenland affecionado to learn to roll this way, the techniques work equally well in normal seakayaks, WW boats just as with euro blades and without paddles. When coaching roll...

Re: Waterproof cameras

Is anyone using a polarizer (or other filter) on their AW100? The camera comes with an adapter for 40.5mm filters, but I doubt the setup would be practical if you stuff it in your PFD. Without anything on it, the recessed lens stays pretty clean in calm conditions. Add a lens cap as well? Keep the a...

Re: South West Sea Kayaking Meet 2014?

Thanks Mark for organizing the event! We had a great time. Next edition we'll be taking more time off so we won't be pushed to bed for early morning paddles instead of heading to the pub. Re: AquaPac & iPhone Safety Issue

Touch screens (digitisers) are fairly simple devices. If you look at your phone screen from an angle, you'll see lots of tiny dots in it, and when you touch it, you make an electrical connection between two of those dots. Sorry but I have to correct this... Touch screens nowadays are rather complex...

Interesting to see the technique that the RNLI crew is using to swim in the water with their drysuits & PFD on (video at 1:35). Not your classic swimming stroke.
Is it a standard technique that is being teached? Already included in some kayak courses?

Re: Waterproof cameras

My Nikon AW100 is still surviving after 2,5yrs of moderate use. I'm happy with the quality of the pictures and movies. It once dropped from about 1m on some concrete and since then something is loose inside, but it doesn't appear to affect the functionality. On the water it lives in a PFD pocket and...

Lucy, we stayed in "Baia Saraceno": http://www.baiasaraceno.com/ We rented a 'Tukul', which is basically a concrete hut with a door, a very small window and a 2 person bed (linen included). The additional fees for extra Ryanair luggage was about the same as the markup for the Tukul so we went for th...

Sardinia Maddalena Archipelago

We just got back from a week of relaxed paddling in the Maddalena Archipelago, on northern Sardinia. We flew into Alghero, rented kayaking kit from Clark at http://www.seakayaksardinia.com/ (excellent service, good quality kit and very friendly guy!) and stayed on a camping site near Palau. A few da...

I use a predecessor of this one: http://global.mobileaction.com/product/product_i-gotU_GT-820.jsp The "Pro" retails for about €109. The standard is about €89. For logging, getting coördinates, checking speed and navigating waypoints (which I locate on my paper chart) it does a great job. I think I w...

Re: Eckla split v bars

I have (and used) them. Found them to be not the correct shape for my boats (I've tried a Sirius S and Alaw Bach). I had to put lots of cushioning in between them and the boat. Very sturdy & simple solution though. On each side of the boat, one of the straps would go through the hole in the V-bar, t...

You got me convinced. OK, it wasn't that difficult. I just ordered an Ortlieb camera bag (I opted for the V-Shot due to the higher IP rating, hope the T-Zip will be as 'fast' as the closing system on the aqua-zoom). I have had excellent experiences with other Ortlieb gear so I trust this one will be...

Re: Another kayak electric pump discussion

I had some discussions with Paul & Julie last year in Anglesey on this and there we came up with the idea of an electronic 'smart' switch. Although I haven't actually started this yet, I have some idea's that would improve typical pump installations a lot. It would get rid of the relay, have 0 stand...
