Adrian, closed season is only for certain kinds of fishery.

Unfortunately most of the country (apart from Broads) does not have the same easy access to lakes....

Yes, but no. Not close enough at current time as almost all in Wales & mostly too low to paddle. Although there is Chester Weir. You may have heard of Llangollen & the Tryweryn.

Canoe fine in the estuaries as long as weather not too rough. A sit on top will be better for pottering along coast, & sea kayak if you want to do longer trips.

Possibly now cutting through ash layers (they would erode very quickly), after a lava flow (more resistant) created the original waterfall.
