It's pretty much canalised, so perfectly feasible to paddle upstream (provided it's not in flood), but will still take a bit longer than going down (rest depends on your fitness & what boat you're paddling)

Quite a bit of the Mad Mile on Upper Dart has similar lines at low & medium water, that most of us wouldn't want to take when high!

From facebook: New tree (in leaf and moderate size but needs to be avoided), river center about 50m below Tarr Steps just out of sight on Saturday 15th Feb.
It is likely to have moved with the 2m level this morning (Sunday).

Although he hasn't posted on that FB account since autumn 2017 (trip to Bali for Ben Brown's wedding).

Zambezi then Nile were a bit like the goldrush with most employed paddlers blowing their money as soon as they earned it & I doubt he got any compensation for the island that's now under the dam.
