Re: Throwline length question

Surely you don't know what use the line will have on any given day, if your boat is pinned then it would be useful??? Climbing out of a gorge or moving gear up a step bank?

Re: Tyne Tour - behind the times?

I understand what you are saying but not everyone is perhaps as keen as you to get on a river where they may be access issues and confrontations with possibly hostile landowners or fisherfolk. If they know they have access and it's "official" then they are more likely to be attracted to attend and d...

Re: Companies that rock

AS Watersports, I bought a pair of Sweet paddling shorts and loved them but some of the stitching came undone. Contacted AS and a new pair was posted and within 48 hours replacement pair arrived at my door. I hadn't even returned the old pair, they are in the post on there way back. Brilliant effort...

Re: travelling to Briancon by plane train

The Geneva option works but as above says its a long option. Train from Geneva is change at Grenoble then train to Gap then train back up the Durance valley to Briancon or L'Argentiere. It took about 7 hours in all.

Re: The case for air bags...

I have tried airbags but being 6'2" and footrests pretty to the max of their travel, doesn't leave a lot of space to put an airbag. The tube is just long enough to inflate and then it always seems to come loose and be flapping around my boat. The best i can do is to put some foam blocks down their b...

I really like the book (Guide book collector of sorts that I am) and the stories/tales on some of the runs, I guess its a shame that the recent Lakes book covers one of the biggest areas of your book. This is almost 100 pages of duplication however I feel both books sit well with each other, the Lake...

With the amount of info on the internet, a guide book is almost redundant as the info is out there but I love them. As for the Welsh GB, you could always use the pair of them they are both wonderful resources.

I have walked some of this and seen it from the various bridges, I would be nervous where the river goes through the lake at the big house and grounds? I am defo up for a run of this as it is the nearest river to me.

It would be good if the people violated pursued this and didn't take this crappy answer. I'm sure a policeman would not stand up in court and say as much . I understand why you might not take action.

When it's running the river above Vallouise, the Gyr? Is a fast short run that is about same time as the shuttle, not that I've run it but seen a few decent paddlers zip down it.

Isn't there more to this than is being said, didn't some of the providers recently complain that charges were being raised for them coaching and they collective indicated that finances at the WCA were not very good. A mention of a loss in the shop etc and maybe not a good financial plan. So how abou...

Re: Rescue Course Obstruction at Holne Bridge

I am with you Patrick, if they are blocking the river when they knew lots of kayakers are on the river is dangerous without a look out to stop people getting into trouble. As for signs there are not any universally accepted set of signals I believe, I certainly wouldn't have recognised his signal as...

Re: Euthanasia.

Morsey I'm not sure it's a club mindset with me, I keep seeing my peers go up to Dartmeet and take a beating. When a paddler of my ability gets beaten up, I take the message onboard and my anxiety and fear grow exponentially. I would love to be able to give it a go but alarm bells rings.

So could someone make the Upper Dart a lot easier so I can paddle it? No thanks, I think we should leave well alone as to changing the river other than removing tree blockages.

With so many hydro schemes either approved or up for approval, it seems that the WCA or a representative body needs to be coordinating efforts to fight these many threats to Welsh WW rivers.

Re: Holne Weir on the River Dart

The chute river left (RH side of the last photo above) had no visible problems on Sunday - level: just lapping onto the ledge - and was a clean (if slightly scrapey) run. It appears that the whole of the LH end of the concrete weir lip has been washed round through 90 deg away from the L bank, leav...

Re: Couple of questions about rivers of South Alps.

There is a good chance there will be snow in April in this region, I think the advice in the guide is good for May /June as the snow may not have melted earlier than this. The timing of the first run offs is not easy to predict and when it happens the rivers can get enormous and almost unpaddleable ...

Holne Weir on the River Dart

May I suggest anyone intending running this weir gets out river left to inspect. The left side of the weir is damaged and moved a few metres downstream. This has exposed some nasty metalwork which pinned one of our club members this afternoon. Paddler got out with a small cut and it took us 30 plus ...

Bizarrely we call that the lower lower Dart, a good place for intro to WW which our club sometime use. The get out at Staverton has had issues and maybe the Totnes guys can update you on this.
