Nto so sure its a conspiracy as such. This is a widely used tactic that hundreds of organisations, including mine use to obtain royalty free photographs. Why else run a photographic competition? Is it adding the the core aims of the Union? No It's a great (and not underhand) way to collect images an...

If you read between the lines, this is simply a case of the BCU trying build up a catalog of images for their use, for publicity, websites, promotions. It's cheaper for them to offer what will turn out to be around £1000 for a (hopefully) wide selection of pictures, rather than pay a photographer to...

Holiday Reading

Right, I'm off on holiday in a couple of weeks, can anyone recommend any good quality books to take to read? Anything paddling related! I remember a discussion here some years ago about essential reading and have searched the forums, but with no luck. (I read a couple of books about the Cockshell He...

British World Champion

OK, so most of us on here are recreational paddlers, but I thought I would point out that over the weekend was the World Flatwater Racing Championships in Germany. At the event Tim Brabants took the K1 1000m Gold Medal and K1 500m Silver Medal. Well done Tim! See more info here: http://www.canoeicf....

In terms of using this information to counteract our adversaries who claim we are all middle class white males I would expect we would appear very diverse when looking at socio-economic groups. The scale sites students as group E, the lowest group. I would expect that any on time there must be a goo...

Teva Pong

Does anyone have any solutions getting rid of the gut wretching odour of Teva sandals? I've have a pair for a couple of years and for all this time they were fine. I wore them non-stop for 6 months in New Zealand and they didn't even have a hint of an aroma. Two weekends ago (when it was a real hot ...

I bought one a year or so back, they had them in Maplins for around a tenner. He's pretty good for a laugh, certainly for £10, he's well worth the cash, not sure I'd pay £45 though! The forward motion comes entirely from his paddle stroke, but the steering is using a rudder. He's pretty slow as well...

720

I've had the 720 for about 6 months and found it supurb. Image quality has been great, tough as nuts. I've also taken it out snowboarding and snorkling (deeper than 3m) and it's been top notch. Buiy my only gripe is with the lens cover mechanism. There is a small gap between the cover and the lens i...

We paddled the Wye from Llangurig to Rhaeder yesterday, it was very pleasant, mostly grade 2 with a couple of 3's all portageable if any of them don't fancy it. The final fall in Rhaeder itself is classed up to a four, though I'd suggest this is over graded. It was a medium to low level and it reall...

Does your Rocker not have a small rubber strip along the bottom of the rear of the helmet?

The elastic of the goggles sits on this quite nicely, I assumed it was a hangover from their snowsport Trooper. It's a touch lower than ideal but its never come loose on its own.

As a young lad, when I first started paddling, I was given a peice of advice from a guy in my club who I really respected: "The one part of your body that you really want to protect and you want to spend as little money on it as possible?" Since then, I've picked my helmets with this one thought in ...

Whilst I agree that the result of the pilot schemes and the self congratulatory announcements of the EU are "a load of old tosh" and that many of us think we are passed the point of writing and talking, is there any merit in attempting what the EA suggest? Should we look at a section of river, pay t...

Crime in Nottingham

Just to stick up for Nottingham for a moment with regard to its bad press, I've been around for around 10 years no and it's no where near as bad at the press make out. All the issues Nottingham has with crime are centred around local groups having issues with each other, for students it's no worse t...
