Re: Water Temperatures

River Itchen, Twyford (Winchester) 15th Sept '14: 14.5C (58F) Typical Hampshire chalk stream: chilly and fast-flowing. A hard chalk bed more like concrete. I accessed the water via the public path down to the M3 bridge over the river, from a lay-by on the A3090 adjacent to J11. Wildswimmer Pete

Re: Charity Steam Paddle for Muscular Dystrophy

I'm game to take part, but depending on the weather I might need my tether (it's quite heavy to carry on my back). Would anyone going my way be able give me a lift (contribution to expenses naturally). Another opportunity to blatantly defy Welsh Dee Partnerships' Rule 16 - "No wild swimming". Wildsw...

Re: the One Show tonight

I've never seen anyone "clad in lycra on plastic boats" while I've been paddling! Well, I wear spandex (near relative of lycra) in rivers. ;-) I don't have TV but I watched the piece via iPlayer catch-up. I thought it quite well balanced, I really liked the clip of Doug Caffyn telling it as it is, ...

A group of kayakers came downstream while I was there, but no sign of any anglers within my view from the flat rocks, up- nor downstream. Had a good chat with Phil at Gradient Foods together with another wild swimmer re. what's been happening.

River Dee, Llangollen 7th September '14: 15C (59F) River slightly peaty and flowing quite swiftly. I swam (or rather, sat on my arse in the river) for a good half-an-hour and no Welsh Dee Partnership apparatchik dared to turn up and moan at us. This was from the flat rocks (Riverside Park) which ar...

There's "Swimmers' Itch" caused by an accidental infection by a parasite. It occurs in fresh water. I've never had it despite my 45 years' swimming outdoors.

Looking at the Outdoor Swimming Society's FB page (link above) things are hotting up re Llangollen. Quicky has proposed a mass paddle and swim - I think that is a bloody fantastic idea. I'm game :-)

Water clarity very good, level was a little higher than usual but very little current. The water temp is on the low side, at this time of the year it should be 20-21C.

I'd suggest that excessive hygiene could be part of the problem. This obsession with cleanliness is leading to young children not having their developing immune systems challenged, with the consequences we see today. As a tadpole in the 1950s together with other kids of my generation, I played in th...
