Pickmere Lake, Pickmere, Cheshire 17th April '15: 13C (55F) Basically I copied and pasted the entry from the 7th because the only change was adding a "1" to the date. Found out that the power boats are using the lake but they are sticking to their half of the lake. The half that is common land abut...

Pickmere Lake, Pickmere, Cheshire 7th April '15: 13C (55F) First black 'un this year. In fact I was convinced we'd see only 10C at best so took another measurement: 13C. There was a guy paddling passing us on some stand-up thingy like a sailboard without a sail. Looks like they might have banned th...

No ice, however the Weaver at Frodsham is brackish so ice is very rare.

Thanks Mary, will be continuing to swim as long as I'm able.

No pic today because there's no ice nor snow and the resulting view would be just the same as the previous post, even down to the weather.

Hatchmere, Delamere Forest, Cheshire 18-1-15: 1.5C (35F) taken @ 2foot depth as per FINA stipulation, surface temp. under ice 1C (33F) . Bear in mind water's density is highest around 4C then reduces again as the temp. approaches freezing, so below that figure there is a temperature inversion with ...

North Sea, Arbroath, Angus 23rd December '14: 6C (43F) A briny one today, and yes I did go fully in although I kept well within my depth due to a stiff (and very chilly) offshore breeze. Seawater doesn't have the "bite" that freshwater has at similar temperatures. https://farm9.staticflickr.com/858...

Re: Council Bylaws

can the council apply a bylaw that states no canoeing on a river that flows through their park? It is on their general "council parks bylaws". Council jobsworths often use 'Elf'n'safety as an excuse to ban any activity they don't like, or even resent those who can so indulge. The "because we can" n...

Re: Council Bylaws

If the water is private then how can a council bye law apply If the water is a lake then the local authority (ie the community) owns the water and can stipulate who uses said water. However under the law of England and Wales no-one can own flowing water although there is a disputed contention that ...

I was wondering, as I have a bit of an issue on a local river with a fishing club, can the council apply a bylaw that states no canoeing on a river that flows through their park? It is on their general "council parks bylaws". The fishing club was rather aggressive towards me at the weekend and I wo...

Re: Quotes from non kayakers :)

Hang on, context could be important there! If the mother was not dressed to get wet but felt she needed to supervise the kids whilst they were in the water than this is quite sensible - if she needs to get inside before the rain starts, she needs them to get out of the water..... Then again, how ef...

On a slightly different tack: Mother warns her kids who were swimming in Hatchmere at the time, that they need to get out "because it looks like rain".

I kid you not, I was there.

Back in freshwater today - didn't need to wash my gloves, boots and helmet under the tap to remove any salt. Current a little stronger than usual but water surprisingly clear.
