More Shetland Photos

Having arrived at Lerwick at 7.30am following an overnight ferry crossing, it wasn't long before we were on another ferry, taking us from Lerwick to the island of Bressay. Our destination was the island of Noss, which Angus, local paddler and sea kayak guide, thought would be a spectacular introduct...

Re: Shetland is the best place on earth!

Richard's headlights on his kayak are the bees' knees when it comes to Shetland's caves and tunnels. My piddly little headtorch was close to useless. I did though, have a bit of a blonde moment in one cave, went in, put my torch on, went in a bit further and waited for my eyes to get used to the dim...

Re: Shetland is the best place on earth!

Hi Lucy, The last picture is the most westerly point of Fogla Skerry. Fogla Skerry and its neighbour Lyra Skerry were just amazing. On approach it is obvious that Lyra skerry has a tunnel straight through at water level. What only becomes obvious as you paddle under the island is that there is a sma...

Mary, what a typo to make. I certainly did mean 'best'. Now can someone tell me how to edit my post?

Shetland is the best place on earth!

I'm hoping that the lack of trip reports and photos on here at the moment means that everyone is out paddling rather than sitting at their computers. I'm going to get the ball rolling with some photos of a trip round papa Stour. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-8ajhFrERDvo/UDX0DlNpNNI/AAAAAAAAD2g/...

When paddling solo, in anything other than flat calm conditions, I use my waist mounted towline and clip it to the deck lines just behing the cockpit. I've never fallen in in such conditions so cannot comment on whether it is usefull but the though of being a long way offshore separated from my boat...

Re: yet more advice on choosing a sea kayak

Get in touch with Pete Baars, Summit to Sea. He runs demo weekends, where a maximum of six people at a time have a chance to try out pretty much any boat on the market. As others have said many times before, the only way to choose a boat is to try them out. Go for comfort first, second and third. Yo...

Which video camera?

I'm looking for a video camera that I can mount on a boat. Must be simple to use (cos I'm a simple person) and really waterproof. What cameras are people using?

Thanks,
Kate

Re: Scottish Trip Ideas Please

How about starting at Glenfinnan on Loch Shiel, spend the first couple of days on fresh water, then down the river and onto the sea near Castle Tioram. Could get off here, but better to continue round the coast to Loch Ailort, or Arisaig, or Morar or Mallaig. All of these places have railway station...

Sorry to everyone good enough to reply to my message. I have been away in Scotland with no internet access for the last 2 weeks. I will reply to everyone individually over the next few days. Re: Pevensey call-out

Back on topic, the above incident demonstrates the importance of having some form of identification in or on the kayak. A name, address and phone number written inside the cockpit might have saved a lot of rescuers time, effort and money and perhaps got the stolen kayak reunited with its owner more ...

I've got a Vito, she's called 'custard' and does 38mpg with a sea kayak on the roof. Never measured fuel consumption with no boats on. Plenty of room for a boat, and even a real bed. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-222CnBd04e0/ThRF_fro6gI/AAAAAAAAC-U/96ayfSqUGog/s576/P1010625.JPG?gl=GB The only p...

I'm going muddy the waters further by saying no thigh braces. I want to be able to sit with my knees up in the cockpit like a K1 paddler does. I can then put my knees under the cockpit rim if I really need to. I don't like boats with very elaborate thigh braces that force you to sit all day in one p...

I think the photo quality is more a reflection of the weather than my sobriety. This was Good Friday, and it rained virtually all day, not heavy but constant drizzle being blown under the hood of my cag.

Not this time. Started from Port Askaig and paddled to Proaig bothy, then to Port Ellen, then round the Oa, then paddled a few short trips out with local paddlers, then home again. Need to go back and finish the job off.

For grade 1-2 rivers you might consider Brathay, from the bridge near Brathay Church to Windermere, mostly grade 1 with a rocky rapid leading into Brathay Pool which is grade 2 in normal water levels. Derwent, from Derwentwater to Bassenthwaite grade 1 Eamont, Ullswater to Eamont Bridge or Brougham ...

For Sale Pyranha Blade kayak. This boat has plenty of scratches as you would expect for a boat of this age, but is structurally sound. I think it is important to find out if you can actu...

Re: Feels like treacle (stuck on edge)

An alternative to the Tuilik (and possibly more easily available) is a cag and deck all-in-one from Peak. I've been using mine for a couple of seasons now and love it. The tube of the deck is huge so it fits loosely. There is no restriction to movement at all.
