Re: Making splits, help needed please

Alloy is fine in saltwater. Just open the splits and wash in freshwater after use ,like you do to flush off your alloy grab handles and fixings of your boat, karabiners etc. Also ,plastics like nylon only swell with continued imersion, the duration of a days trip will have no effect. The stiffness o...

Re: Making splits, help needed please

Cut the shaft. Go to an alluminium stockholder (theyre everywhere). Chances are there will be a diameter to fit snug. If not, get slightly smaller and spiral wind some light glass tape 30mm width, brushing with epoxy resin as you go. When dry ,sand with wet dry to a snug fit. You want a 1.5 to 2 mm ...

Re: Composite Question Again

Use biaxial cloth .the fibres are stiched together with cotton instead of being woven (which weakens it). It drapes easily over tight radii, no need to snip.Glass or carbon will be far lighter/stronger than kevlar. Hope your not using polyester resin.

Re: Drain bungs

Ah yes, that old chesnut. The Holt you refer to is Holt Allen, well known manufacturer of sailing dinghy accessories.Same old story, someone buys it, sticks it in a bag, doubles the price, sells it on. Didnt think a canny Scott would get ripped with that one.

Re: Spay deck loops - a snag hazard?

How about a continuous loop of 1inch webbing, about halfway down deck. Not sewn to it but a couple of velcro tabs holding it. If loop snags, velcro peels and deck frees. Not sure if the webbing would make the deck leak a tad where it goes under the bungee cord?

Re: Composite construction advice

By the way, are you using a female mould or a plug such as an existing helmet. A plug is much quicker if youre only making 1or2 lids. If so, did you design and shape the plug yourself? Also, if anyone has an old stylee lid (think they were called Rohmer ) I will buy it if its for sale.

Re: Composite construction advice

The question mentions csm and woven fabric - these are actually quite different in the way you laminate them onto a curved surface. CSM (chopped strand matt) is just a random arrangement of fibres, held together for ease of placing. Once wet with resin for a short while, the bond between the fibres...
