ROUND BRITAIN KAYAK TRIP
I don't know if this has been flagged up here but Heroes On the Water UK trustee Andy Swainston is paddling around Britain, solo, unsupported, as in no road crew, just getting small help along the way in the form of brews and the odd meal. He left Whitby on 6th June and is now going round the coast ...

Like any other definition of 'professional' - someone who gets paid for it. I would say that Gordon Brown is a 'professional kayaker' as would be anyone else who makes the majority of their income from kayaking.pathbrae wrote:What's a "professional kayaker" ???

My son is just doing his Outdoor Activities with Sport Science degree at Bangor Uni - he earns about £200 a week for full time during the holidays as paid staff with a big adventure company. Considering the responsibility he has, it is peanuts. Don't ask for specifics please, because I am not that u...

Round Cornwall Challenge
On 26th August, at 08.30. From under the Tamar Bridge on the Plymouth side two guys are setting off to paddle around Cornwall, all of it. They are raising funds for Heroes On the Water Uk and one of them is a H.O.W. veteran who has no ankles and wears calipers. They are camping on the beaches as the...

Just ignore the restrictions. Looe Island - I still land there and will continue to do so. My parents knew the two sisters who owned it before it was given in trust, they lived on the island. If anyone questions your landing, you have done so for safety reasons and will leave as soon as you have res...

Re: "Epic kayak fail" video. Capsize while landing a fish
I think the leash tightened the drag. It got caught around the star wheel because the rod was turned over as it was placed and removed from the holster. One reason I changed my leashes to different material, and with different mounting position - my new ones mount UNDER the reel foot and stay out of...

Re: Sit on tops in South Georgia!
It is only the blinkered who have ever thought that open decked kayaks were "not of age" - surf skis (sit on tops) have been used for marathon sea racing for many years. have a look at the Molokai race website for one....lovely pictures Gus. You should get the chap to write a feature for The Paddler.

We use the Duo extensively for tripping in South Africa - it was designed specifically for our expedition requirements (we were taking a party to paddle around Lake Malawi in 2001). The difficulty people seem to experience with paddling in synch is easily overcome - the aft cockpit watches the shoul...

Kaskazi Skua - maybe not well known in the northen hemisphere, but very well thought of elsewhere - and by all owners.
Have a couple I am going to let go, as I am now too stiff to get in a closed cockpit - I can't bend my knees that much anymore.

Re: Wanted - Cheap Sea Kayak
Composite Skua any good? - see the Kaskazi website for full details. Super boat with an easy to get in/out keyhole cockpit, fast through the water too - over stern rudder avoids snagged skegs or the chance of a leak below the waterline - does the same job as a skeg, itis NOT for turning a kayak. A r...

Boathouse clearout!
I am having a good old clearout and rationalisation. So some good bargains to be had. Skua composite sea kayak, with dedicated RIGHTING sail (it keeps the kayak upright, not try to capsize it) White hull, white deck, red trim and hatch covers. http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c118/simoneverett/Sail...

They are on their way. Look here for details and videos of sea kayaks with them fitted. There are also video clips showing how easy they are to fit to any kayak.

Re: Windpaddle sails?^
There will soon be the Pacific Action sail to try as well. I have been using one for 6 or 7 years and it is still going strong. You can see where you are going, you can reach and it does furl easily. It will leave something on the deck - you can't furl a flat earth though. Two sizes worth considerin...

Pacific Action sails
Just a quick heads up that Kayak UK are the new UK distributors for Pacific Action sails. Our relationship with them goes back 7 or 8 years. I wrote the first features in this country on them and had one before they were imported by anyone. Gary kindly sent one over to do the features with. Now the ...

Re: Flares - what to get?
Having experienced several actual emergency situations I would not place great faith in ANY flares of any description, certainly not as a means of raising the alarm. We had 3 shore observers with binos, and 78 kayakers in a stretch of the Exe estuary just 1.5 miles long. One got into difficulty on t...

Car inner tube - does the job! turn the kayak upside down and it traps the air inside and stays afloat - but means the paddler remains immersed. Re: Should I have a VHF?
Since when did the RYA take over the issuing of licenses? To many leisure users perhaps, beause they don't know any different and the RYA has swamped the marine market with THEIR "authority" but I think the MM / DOT would beg to differ and I can't see merchant navy officers doing an RYA course to us...
