I see them fine. Perhaps it's a browser security setting thing, as they're hosted on a site which is "not secure". Can you see them here, Owen? http://peakandpaddle.co.uk/kayaking-and-wild-camping-around-loch-lomond-scotland Ah! For some reason my host hadn't added an SSL certificate to t...

Re: Loch Lomond trip report!

Nicely done. We had a troop (?) of wallabies visit our camp on Inchconnachan one night - one sitting literally within a few feet of us. But as soon as you point a camera at them, that's it, they're off. Does the autofocus use infrared and can they see it? Good choices of camp spots. Oh I'm quite en...

Re: Loch Lomond trip report!

Nice write up. I'm intrigued by the Thaw heat patches. How do they work? Reckon a lightweight hot water bottle could be very useful for cold camping. You get the Thaw patches from outdoor shops. They're actually for warming your hands so they're quite small, but one on your belly at night actually ...

Re: Loch Lomond trip report!

It seems the wallabies are nocturnal, best times to see them is dawn and dusk. There was an uproar a few years ago when the NP came up with a plan to kill them off as they were an invasive species. They had to very quickly scrap that idea. The fact they'd been on the island for decades and hadn't s...

Re: Loch Lomond trip report!

Sounds like a great trip - makes me wish I'd done it the adventurous way, with wild camping, especially with visits from the wallabies. I'd been under the impression that the wallabies still being there was something of an urban myth - having died off ages ago. After reading your report, I turned t...

Loch Lomond trip report!

So I had the most fantastic trip to Loch Lomond last week and have written a blog post on my little site: http://peakandpaddle.co.uk/kayaking-and-wild-camping-around-loch-lomond-scotland But in the spirits of not just trying to get visitors to my site (because that's really not my aim), here's the c...

Re: Loch Lomond info?

I arrived in one piece and had a fantastic day paddling around, being occasionally hailed and rained on, whilst all the fells around the loch got a blanket of snow. What a beautiful place, this is like heaven for me! Can’t believe it’s just 20 minutes from Glasgow. https://media.ukriversguidebook.co...

Re: Composite Virgo vs Volan

The Volan is longer and was never marketed as a glass Virgo But they're still very similar in a lot of ways; in particular, that whilst they're both short enough and have hard chines to be playful, they're also both long enough to be suitable for multi day trips (unlike the Aries, which is very muc...

Re: Loch Lomond info?

The forecast for today was for wind and rain all day. Nicest weather we've had for weeks, little wind and sunny. The forecast for the rest of the week is all over the place, so you could be lucky. I'm over near Stirling. The forecast has been changing constantly but the overall picture looks more o...

Sorry, realised I wasn't very clear.
By 'out on the islands' I meant the outer hebrides.

Re: Loch Lomond info?

Out on the islands, it is really changeable. Sunny, wet, windy, calm, all in one day. The seriously strong winds look to be over for this winter. We are just getting normal 20-40mph winds now. There are periods of calm as well. Currently the forecast isn't looking too bad for the winds, yeah. I'm b...

Re: Composite Virgo vs Volan

I had the same thoughts; always thought of the Volan as the glass Virgo. I actually posted on the P&H Facebook group directly asking P&H what the performance differences were, and got a reply from them suggesting I try the two boats for myself. Which didn't really answer my question.

Re: Close Call Yesterday

Woah! That was so unexpected! And the odds of it happening just at that very moment as you were approaching it are so small, and yet it did happen! Scary stuff. I've paddled there several times myself and will now keep my distance from those cliffs next time. Looks like you had nice conditions there...

Go ahead :) (For what it’s worth, I was born very very far away from the UK and have lived on three continents and speak a couple of languages. I actually do tend to use the word loch when I’m in Scotland, but when I’m writing things, I tend to fall back on old habits. It’s not any English arrogance...

Re: Loch Lomond info?

Being more English than Scottish, I tend to use the word lake, sorry if that upsets you. If I lived in Scotland, the word loch would probably become habit, but unfortunately for now I’m stuck here in England!

Re: Loch Lomond info?

One thing I meant to say was that if there's a clear night, there's quite often a temperature inversion over the loch. A pool of colder air sits over the loch, and it's flat calm. When the wind blows the cold air away, it goes from F1 to F5 in less than a minute. So be cautious if the day starts ca...

Re: Loch Lomond info?

I belonged to the sailing club just North of Milarochy. We didn't sail from October to March, but the wind patterns are the same all year. The mountains can make the wind quite gusty. Generally the waves don't get bigger than 60cm to 1m, and the 1m would only happen in winds you wouldn't want to be...

Hi Leigh, As alluded to by Damo, the Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park is the exception to our enlightened access laws in Scotland. You should be OK on the islands, but from 1st March you'll need a permit for large areas of the loch shore - there's some info here: https://www.lochlomond-tro...

Hi Leigh I've paddled the south end a couple of times from Luss one time was in an inflatable and I noticed wind then. The islands gave shelter and I saw Muntjack deer on one. My brother and I spent one night either Luss or another site which. I think it was somewhere just before the road heads to ...

Loch Lomond info?

Hi all! I am planning a solo trip to Loch Lomond soon. I basically just want to spend a few days paddling around the southern part of the lake, launching from Luss, exploring the islands and wild camping. I wondered if anyone here has any good insider information about the area? I've taken a look at...

Oh yeh, nice. I was out at Clywedog on my bike a few weeks ago. All those Welsh lakes and forests are on our door step so we are very lucky. Vyrnwy is a very beautiful setting and I've walked and cycled there many times but never paddled it. You're right though, Vyrnwy is a very popular 'Welsh Hone...

Re: Did YOU paddle today ?

A Micro adventure, how cool. Is that Vyrnwy Leigh? I love a microadventure! It's Clywedog :) I haven't actually visited Vyrnwy yet, but intend to! Have you paddled there? I usually go to places where I can wild camp, and it looks like all of Vyrnwy's shoreline is privately owned, which can make thi...
