Talk of threats, that honestly scares me, and I don't know why? Please don't cancel a thing just becasue you don't agree with it.
You ok Andy? Pretty sure it's ok so stay with us and lets see what we can find.

Re: wings and sea kayaks?

I'm not going to discuss paddling technique because (1) I'm not qualified and (2) trying to discuss complex movements via the medium of internet forums inevitably leads to chest-beating and handbag battles, but... as this thread has evolved into an inquiry about the efficiency of wing paddles v. ot...

Re: wings and sea kayaks?

I'm deliberately not thinking about what the findings may be to avoid inadvertently influencing the tests. I will probably do all my test runs and only take the times off the GPS afterwards. Unfortunately I have a virus so will not be doing any tests for a while. Hope it passes quick, I thought we ...

Fab. We can set up a test after xmas. Sorry to post on christmas day but been up since 5 with the boys going mental! Finally got them to calm down and have some breakfast! Just curious if you have any expectations about the findings and what they maybe, dont know if that is a silly thing to ask bef...

Re: wings and sea kayaks?

I am not in possession of a wing paddle but will use my Greenland paddle. I probably won't be going to sea for a bit but will be on a local canal shortly. The thread has at least given some food for thought. I'll give a try at some different stroke rates and angles and see what it looks like on my ...

Re: wings and sea kayaks?

A salutary tale. It’s very easy to get too prescriptive over many aspects of kayaking including forward paddling whether with Euros, wings or sticks. As with other sports like skiing and climbing people will have their own styles (often making them easily recognisable when on the move) which suits ...

Re: wings and sea kayaks?

Thanks, that is the area that I'm questioning I guess, is there extra efficiency when used to bimble? Or are wings so demanding of good technique, and fast enough sideways movement of the blade to generate lift, that an easy paddle in a sea kayak won't get that benefit of extra distance? My gut fee...

Re: wings and sea kayaks?

Thanks. John Willacy's article is very good and makes a lot of sense to me. He doesn't mention cadence specifically, but does say "What few mention also, is the fact that for wings to be effective then you need to paddle at a certain pace". That is, however, an almost exact quote from the...

Re: wings and sea kayaks?

Fair enough, point taken. No I don't think endurance exercise by itself is very healthy without other forms being practiced for overall durability. I was a runner for years and paddled sea kayak in the same way. Just got really good at enduring, was very good at pushing to paddle or run for many ho...

Re: wings and sea kayaks?

You don't have to have a fast kayak, you don't need to be a strong conditioned paddler to get the benefit of using wings. You can use a general touring kayak, be an average paddler just out for a nice bimble around the bay and still enjoy an extra little push with each paddle stroke. You could be d...

Re: wings and sea kayaks?

Ahh, don't do it! This is a sea kayak page! Trying to promote all round physicall fitness here is like going to a gym and trying to convince the body builders to go running! Sea kayaking is biased towards endurance and body builders are biased towards resistance work. It's tradition.......... it's ...

Re: wings and sea kayaks?

wing paddles suit faster boats, if just looking at effieciency, they need to be spinning quite fast to work as designed Can you quote a source for that? I'm not disagreeing, but neither of those things is obvious to me. I agree that faster boats need a higher stroke rate, but don't see the connecti...

Re: wings and sea kayaks?

I think that fitness has become a bit vague a term. It's often used to talk about someone who looks attractive, ie he/she looks fit! But being fit for the purpose or environment is the real meaning of the word. So a hill runner is fit to run up hills, and the longer they do it the more conditioned a...

For a history and explanation of paddle design and manufacture, and a cracking read too I highly recommend Alistair Wilson's (founder of Lendal Paddles,Olympian etc) book Behind the Paddle, sadly Alistair died earlier this year so even more poignant. Re: wings and sea kayaks?

Physical training is the elephant in the room here possibly. Sea kayaking coaches often have to be tactful about that one I suspect, if they want to keep their clients, because sea kayakers generally don't want to be told that the biggest gains they could make would come from getting a bit fitter/s...

Some photo's of my paddle, I got them second-hand they came with crank shafts, not sure the cranks added anything. I did contemplate changing them for a set of full on wings, till I saw the price. I tried watching your little video but got bored. Not sure what he added to the conversation. That's a...

Re: wings and sea kayaks?

Wing paddles, I should have defined a bit better, being the modern post 1980's(?) spoon shaped blades. Also - with apologies for the off-topicness - I'm slightly intrigued by the antique 'wing' paddle you mentioned earlier. Was it also spoon-shaped like a modern wing paddle? What was it made of? It...

Re: wings and sea kayaks?

I think it's all horses for courses, personal preference, bit surprised there has not been more input from wing users but the whole topic is a little polarised. As if one type is better than another? What bothers me, and this is maybe just a very local issue, is the use of wings with beginners in s...

Re: wings and sea kayaks?

I think the hypothesis I'm putting forward here is that if you switch to a wing from a euro-blade, modify your forward paddling style to suit and find an advantage there, some of that is coming from the wing itself and some of it is coming from the modified technique. (And perhaps that accounts for...

Re: wings and sea kayaks?

To me, wings and GP have in common that they are designed to have water flow smoothly off one edge of the blade, rather than stalled flow forming eddies off both edges. I have read many times that this creates lift, but never seen any test results that show this (I would be interested if anyone has...
