Re: Roof rack or inflatable kayak

Was it a Karitek roof rack that you were pricing up? if so don't worry - it's one of the best investments you can make if you have a motor home and sea kayak.

Seat height?

Planning on a shakedown this weekend, first time in the water this year. One thing to experiment with is different seat heights in my Isel. Do people find this makes much difference in stability, ease of edge control etc?

Re: waterproof camera for sea kayaking

Thanks, that’s tempting but so are the extra benefits of the tg-5, particularly larger pixels for Image quality, exposure compensation and double glazed front to reduce risk of condensation. I’ll think it over and get back to you

Re: Valley Sirona 16.1 RM - fit?

The Sirona was on my short list too from what I read about it. However when I tried one it handled totally different to what I had expected and didn't suit what I was looking for. It's a big investment and worth the expense and time to arrange demos. Maybe a weekend trip to Anglesey where you can ar...

waterproof camera for sea kayaking

I'm planning to get a waterproof camera rather than relying on my mobile phone in a waterproof case. The Olympus Tg-5 looks very good but at a price. It seems to me that all the waterproof compact options suffer from two limitations compared to a DSLR or good quality non-waterproof compact: A small ...

Re: "New personal performance awards" - Huh?

the changes seem positive to me from the perspective of our recent 3 star (with ms On The Rocks), for which the criteria seems the same as Coastal Sea Kayak Award, This fits with our comfort zone of being independent in up to F4 and 2 Knots. I like the emphasis on competency to be independent rather...

Re: Should a 4* Leader be a 5* Follower?

Aled, a very useful scale. Particularly in a peer paddling group where the group's decision making process can be "unstructured". In a couple of trips last year unforeseen changes in conditions have resulted in a change from level 5 to 9 or even 10. The lesson from this was that in a peer group of m...

Custom drysuit for female?

My partner is looking to get a custom fit drysuit. The off the shelf options don't fit, she currently uses separate dry trousers and cag but the waist seal is too cumbersome and not water tight enough. Please can anyone recommend a supplier? A drop seat or similar arrangement is essential. Thankyou

P&H phazer

I’ve inherited a P&H Phazer, a 1980s type fibreglass slalom kayak. Would this be a sensible boat for my introduction to white water kayaking? I’ve no experience of river kayaking but am a BCU 3 star sea kayaker. The Phazer is a bit beat up with a few patches and needs a footrest and backrest, also o...

Re: River white water training for sea kayaking?

I'm a relative beginner but my understanding is that edging is putting the kayak on edge while keeping paddler's centre of gravity firmly above the centre line, this changes the profile of the hull, much like an aircraft's wing creating "lift" to the right or left depending on the side edged leaning...

Re: River white water training for sea kayaking?

Thanks everybody, lots of good stuff here, I’ll get down the club river session on Sunday and borrow a boat. Hopefully getting too used to edging the wrong way won’t Impair my sea kayaking. But improved balance and quicker reaction/support would be useful, also more rolling in real situations, and h...

River white water training for sea kayaking?

I guess that at this time of year river and white water kayaking may be good training and practice for sea kayaking? Those plastic flat bottomed short tubs we have at club rolling practice and what folk use on the rivers nowadays seem a world away from sea kayaks or even the fibreglass slalom kayaks...

Re: Paddler size Isel and Alaw Bach

Hi. We both have Isels and get on with them really well. Good stability, holds a line well in wind, easy to roll. I think the Alaw Bach has same or similar Hull but higher deck and more volume? We haven’t been camping in then yet but when we do will have to pack light. I’m 5’4” and 68 kg. My female ...

This is an update and thanks for all of the helpful advice for us newbies. After trying a number of boats we both got new Rockpool Isels and very pleased with them too. Re: Touring cag for climbing

I fear a spindrift avalanche on a Ben Nevis gulley would even get past the zip on my dry suit, and I wouldn’t want to be drowned in sweat on the walk in. It may be cheaper to get separate adequate jackets for each activity than one which would work for both?

Thanks everybody, the course was very useful. The RYA sent along their own examiner for the test as the trainer is no longer allowed to conduct the test himself, so I don't feel so bad about the RYA fee.

OK I'm more confused now - have I got this right?: I've paid for a course which costs £75 (good value), this includes a test I pass the test and send off a chit to the RYA, I pay them £60 to read the chit and print a "certificate of competence" (very poor value) Meanwhile I can apply for a licence f...

VHF licence fee

We are doing a VHF course next weekend. Happy to pay £75 for the course and we are looking forward to it. However the £60 for RYA licence fee seems a bit over the top. Is there actually a legal requirement for the licence? The trainer has said I can send the pass form and fee directly to the RYA aft...
