Re: kids BA vs spraydeck

So far I'm just on flat water with him so I doubt he'll get many splashes over the top of the spraydeck tube

I'm more of a sea kayaker myself - but I think I'm going to need to work on my whitewater skills to be ready when he is :-D

Re: kids BA vs spraydeck

Does't the neoprene deck still have a tendency to pool water ?

Once or twice I've put my spray deck on too low and found I collected a puddle myself.

Is it a smaller puddle than a baggier nylon deck would cause ?

Re: kids BA vs spraydeck

ah yes - I think a crotch strap would be good for him as the BA has a habit of riding up on him

so maybe spraydeck outside isnt such a crazy idea

kids BA vs spraydeck

I recently introduced my 7 year old kid to kayaking (big grins all around) Last session in the pool we introduced the spray deck - lots of fun wet exiting.... the only issue was fitting the deck around his BA I ended up putting the deck on over the BA Boat is a dagger dynamo, deck is a nylon one fro...

community forum for coaching and committees

not sure where to post this but inspired by the "gone quiet" thread I figured here is as good a place as any Is there a forum or facebook group that people know of for discussing issues that come up when coaching, leading, or just generally trying to run things. I'm sure we all go through many of th...

Re: Bl**dy Rolling

Despite pool sessions and trying to stretch/educate my muscle memory with a broomstick sat on my floor at home I can't get anywhere near an effective paddle sweep arc. My body doesn't want to move in the required way. my offside roll works sometimes .. to get here I started getting the feel for a s...

Re: Safetrx - New CG and RYA vessel registration and tracking system

I tried safetrx for the first time this week on a caostal trip. according to it i headed 2 miles inland a couple of times... just came across this and since I've been using the app for every trip since I think it's worth an update. First the stability of the app has increased enourmously - it now w...

Re: Insurance and qualifications

that was me - I have much less experience.

I've decided that I'll try and join some experienced groups, and probably do some peer paddling with the more experienced paddlers in my current club.

Re: Insurance and qualifications

I have heard from more than one UK paddlers that in such cases, the UK authorities will put blame on the highest qualified member of the group, no matter if he/she was actually a leader of the group. For that reason, some highly qualified UK paddlers have stopped joining trips with less experienced...

Re: Insurance and qualifications

Yes that is the £10 000 000 question If BCU insurance covers all members on all activities then "insurance rules" dont need to be restrictive and we can get out have fun and consider safety for its own sake. There is a great fear of liability issues in our society that seems to me disporoportionate ...

Re: Insurance and qualifications

OP asks why "clubs need to worry about insurance". I did say that didnt I.. but I meant it rather more literally as in "why is insurance such a source of worry" rather than "do clubs need insurance" also - as my club only has quaified coaches for white water and I want to go out on the sea it doesn...

Re: Insurance and qualifications

One thing that's been on my mind and this confirms is the need to really check and make it OK for people to turn back early - hard when part of a group may be dissapointed. I dont know the details of your trip - but I know the dangers of peer pressure leading to people sometimes pushing on when they...

Re: Insurance and qualifications

if someone receives (for example) a life changing injury, meaning they need some kind of regular care, and also have a loss of earnings over their lifetime, and they were on a club trip when whatever caused it happened, and if it was due to a negligent act, then morally and legally the injured part...

Re: Insurance and qualifications

I'm no expert in any of this this ... all I've done is tread the policy. funny thing is I've had conversations with people who don't even paddle and certainly haven't ready the policy - and that didn't stop them acting like an authority on the matter :-D I've read some of it (by no means the whole ...

Re: Insurance and qualifications

Am I right in understanding the policy is all about being sued for negligence ? as in you might get sued for negligence even though you might later be found not negligent and that if not negligent there is no case for damages Further that following BCU guidelines regarding qualified coaches followin...

Re: Insurance and qualifications

I'm not saying it's OK if someone dies just so long as I don't get sued (apologies if it came across that way) I'm just asking - do people actually get sued for the inevitable (usually minor) incidents that happen in paddlesport? Because there is a massive gulf between common practise of non-club pa...

Re: Insurance and qualifications

I think the difference between "taking club members out..." and "going out for a paddle with some club members" might become relevant in the event that there was an incident. But what is the difference? Lets say on a club session a few suitably experienced paddlers go out on the sea and on returnin...

Insurance and qualifications

Why do clubs need to worry about insurance ? As far as I can see it seems to cover only cases of negligence which might result in someone getting sued. It's not like insurance covers injury caused by accident or freak event (right?). So insurance doesn't actually offer much to people being led/coach...

Maybe the app works better on different phones - it was very buggy for me (Android on a Samsung Galaxy S6)

Glad to hear it works OK for some.
