British canoeing rant

Why do I feel like British canoeing are constantly trying to squeeze more money from me! I completed my paddlesport instructor qual which I believed the remit allowed me to do paddle starts and discover. Today I receive an email after another £15 for what looks like info we received on the course fo...

First aid kits

Good afternoon fellow paddlers. Being the diligent paddler I am, I decided to look over my first aid kit prior to an upcoming river trip. I’ll cut to the chase… the contents were….pitiful and I’d even say not fit for purpose. So, I’m curious to see if; 1. Do you routinely carry a first aid kit 2. If...

If you can afford the FXR I would personally opt for that.

What paddle do you use?

Happy new year paddlers. I’m looking to get a new (new to me not necessarily brand new) paddle. I’m a curious cucumber and thought it would be interesting to see what paddles you all use. I currently use a Werner player 194 with a 45 feather (I think). I’m thoughts are the moment is to try a VE (197...

Re: Freestyle kayak

New update - so having set the seat back to standard I found that I could fit in fairly easily (especially in my usual paddling kit (without boots)). After the surprise of how tippy the Jed is compared to my Burn I’ve grown to really love this boat. Thank you to everyone for their replies. For anyon...

Re: Winter paddling - Gloves/no gloves

For years I experimented with gloves, but couldn't find any that made me feel any warmer than paddling with bare hands. The water evaporates off the surface of the gloves, and that sucks heat from your hands, even if your hands themselves are dry. Then I paddled with bare hands for a while, but tha...

Winter paddling - Gloves/no gloves

Good morning everyone. Hope you are all well. My question for today is: Do you wear gloves/poggies or any other hand protection whilst paddling in winter? If so, what do you recommend? Type of paddling I plan to do: Flat water Moving water (grade 2/3) Thanks in advance. Sent from my iPhone using Tap...

Re: Freestyle kayak

Thank you. Yeah the Burn is very much like a sofa on the water. [emoji16] can’t knock a bit of comfort. So a bit of an update - I took a look at the seat area and noticed that the previous owner did a bit of customisation. A few photos and a friendly call with Matt from Up and Under gave me the reas...

Freestyle kayak

Just wondering how tight a fit should a freestyle kayak be? I usually use a Burn 3 (large) which I find gives me ample room. However recently bought a Jed (large) expecting a similar feel, however it feels rather tight. Is this usual? It could partly be down to the previous owners set up and I just ...

Thank you everyone for the quick responses.
I think for the time being I will keep it on. Like previously mentioned. I’d rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
Thanks again everyone.

Advice please - pfd quick release strap, yes or no?

I was just curious whether anyone uses the quick release strap on white water style PFD when using them on flat water? I’ve recently bought a palm fxr which has a quick release strap and ring. Is it integral for the pfd to fit properly or can I take it off when not on fast moving water where a live ...

Thank you everyone for your comments - all makes complete sense. As I said at the start it wasn’t meant as a jab at clubs - just so I can fully understand and appreciate the value I’m getting. Hopefully look forward to joining a club soon (ish - given our current conditions). Safe boating everyone. ...

Club payments

So I’ve sat on this question for a while as I know it can be a bit of a contentious topic. The question is about club membership payments. I fully understand that if you are receiving training or using a clubs piece of equipment, your membership goes into the upkeep of this. Where I get a bit lost i...

Bumping this in hope of a response.
Happy for just a pointer to a local paddle spot. I’ve tried both Northampton and Bedford clubs but comms are very slow/non existent(guessing Covid has not helped or emails on sites are not regularly monitored).

Re: Ear question

Although more expensive I’d point you in the direction of a good audiologist and get a custom fit. I’ve done this twice now - 1 set for motorbike and 1 set for paddling. You only get one set of ears, it’s worth looking after them. I’ve used these guys in the past - https://www.ultimateear.com Very g...

Re: WANTED... Sit in for new to sport

I’d advise to join a local club. They will have a fair variety of boats for you to try before you buy. I stupidly took to plunge of buying a kayak before trying (would not recommend doing). Luckily for me the kayak I chose (Pyranha Z One - medium) worked rather well for me (despite sitting low in th...

Has anyone done any paddling on the river nene?
If so do you know of any nice areas to paddle?
Particularly interested in any weirs along the river to practice breaking in and out.
Any help would be great.

First aid kit contents

Well a two pronged question really.

How many of you regularly carry a first aid kit within your boat?

Secondly, what do you have in it?

I have a nice waterproofed kit with the standard stuff but looking to make it more fit for purpose. Any recommendations?
