Re: kitting out new sea kayakers

I've done both. A good cag trousers combi and spraydeck barely leaked. Gave seasonal versatility. However got drysuit for cold sea paddling. It's too hot now for inland day trips though. Thermal and wicking base layers have equal importance. Excellent design on Typhoon drysuit.

I came within 6 feet . Left my last uni exam and a bolt hit a waste paper bin destroying it. Cardioverting at 200 joules can stop a junior doctors heart via their tie. Saw it happen.

Re: South East Kayak trail- least portage?..

Plus 1 for Thames. I've found lock keepers very obliging or many locks have rollers that are quick and easier than waiting. I live 10 mins from it in Walton. Regularly spot kingfifishers and even mink on last trip.try Windsor to Putney.

Re: Roof mounted carrier

I went for this https://www.thule.com/en-gb/gb/sport-rack/kayak-roof-racks/thule-dockgrip-_-895000/ . Initially just had padded bars. I put self adhesive felt pads on rear supports and boat slides on and off roof so no more risky lifting. Flexible pads conform to hull. No sideways movement. Halfords...

Tie downs don't just stop a boat moving. They can stop you losing a boat if roof bars fail.

It edges really well .right over to spraydeck part underwater. A couple of strokes and turns on own axis. I've done Shepperton slalom gates in mine! Rolling is a work in progress for me but looking at you tube video it's fine. You tube for clips surfing rockhopping and a grade 4 White water run.

Whitwater the canoe centre in Shepperton have them at £ 369.00 though obviously without the extras. Nearly got one as a starter and well rated.

Front and rear tie downs are there for a reason. I use them others don't bother. Recent Facebook post asking if anyone had seen a canoe near M50 boat and roof rack came off vehicle.

I have the Stratos .really pleased with the performance and outfitting. Mucked about in Devon surf but mainly used on river touring. Paid £ 400 for an immaculate condition second hand with spraydeck.

Re: Paddling in London

Not many canoe clubs allow non members to hire boats. The centre I mentioned www.canoeandkayakthethames.co.uk/faq will help. There are companies who do tours on river sightseeing in the city. If you wanted I could lend you my boat paddle and pfd . Good quality sea worthy equipment. One hour on train...

Re: Paddling in London

There are companies doing the tidal Thames right in the city centre. I've not done any of the tidal section and would advise joining an organised group. My local shop White water the canoe centre in Shepperton Surrey hire boats (venture flex touring ) . Lovely section of river possible to paddle to ...

Just check manufacturers max weight for roof. My Mazda 2 isn't a huge car 1.25 engine and fine with a 14.5 foot kayak.

Re: Inflatable kayak some white water and touring - I’m clueless

Sevylor Colorado would suit. Tough outer and 3 chambers. Spares readily available. ( some models rely on a single chamber with obvious problems if puncture) carry a repair kit and aquaseal. Look on YouTube for video of what it can cope with. Also watch inflation pressure as can expand if hot and dro...
