Re: What car for a sea kayaker?

Thanks for all the suggestions. Fortunately the MOT wasn't as bad as expected so hopefully I'll get another year out of it yet, but good to have the suggestions for when it inevitably starts becoming a money hole or gives up entirely!

Thanks Spikeedog, unfortunately doesn't sound like it meets the economical category though.

Good luck selling it.

Re: Time for a new PDF

Where is the pouch for the bladder ? I watched several video reviews last night and read the specs of it on a few websites, none of them mentioned having a place for a bladder pack ?! There's a space between the mesh and the back foam with a pocket at the bottom which looks like it would nicely hol...

Re: What car for a sea kayaker?

Thanks for the replies. The Auris is a model I was looking at, a few near by on autotrader. The focus sounds alright too, is 1.0 not a bit small an engine?

Interesting debate about keyless, not something I'd considered before.

Just checked mine and it turns out I was talking rubbish! Never knew it had a pouch for a bladder system, thanks for enlightening me!

Re: Time for a new PDF

Fair enough, probably due to me having a more bulky DSC VHF. I carry a PLB, keys, phone and snacks in the clamshell pocket. I might have to try rearranging stuff to see if I can fit it in there.

What car for a sea kayaker?

Hi all, hopefully this is the right place to post this. My car will be heading in for an MOT next week. Depending on the outcome of the MOT I may be looking to a new car, so looking for recommendations for the perfect car for a sea kayaker (and climber). As much as I'd love a campervan I can't affor...

Re: Time for a new PDF

I also have an Astral sea wolf and really like it. However, it doesn't have a platypus pocket, and there isn't a pocket that fits a VHF, I clip my VHF onto a shoulder strap. But as the previous post said, it is very comfy, and it has plenty of space for snacks, PLB, keys etc.

Thanks guys, I'm pretty sure they were sea lice. They didn't look like the pictures in AGNorwich's links, but they did look a lot like this https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=sea+lice&rlz=1C1GGRV_enGB766GB767&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjDwrPhjabcAhUBKcAKHaSlDi0Q_AUICigB&biw=1680&bih=917#img...

Mackerel parasites

Hi all, I stopped off for a fish on the way back from a paddle down the coast yesterday evening and just as I was about to give up felt a tug on the line. As I started to reel it in, there wasn't much fight so I assumed it'd be a small mackerel. As it reached the surface I was surprised to find it w...

Hi David,
How much are you wanting for the Malone gull wing, and how does it differ from the sea wing? Whereabouts in Scotland are you?

Cheers,
Mike

They can also be wakes from boats. Like vapour trails from planes in the sky, if the conditions are right, boat wakes can persist for a surprisingly long time as strips of flat water. You might find the book 'how to read water' by Tristan Gooley an interesting read, covers this and loads of other st...

Re: Picked My New Mk11 Scorpio HV Up Today

Hi Ken, just seen your reply. It's just the day hatch that was loose on my boat, will check it's fully down next time. My skeg slider only goes halfway, but I checked under the boat and it is fully retracted. I assumed the extra space on the slider is to account for any stretch developing in the ske...

Re: Picked My New Mk11 Scorpio HV Up Today

Congratulations, I got my new Scorpio MV earlier this week, christened it today and was very pleased with it. Fantastic boat and super comfy. My only issue was the day hatch came loose a few times despite pushing it on firmly. One of the guys I was paddling with suggested wrapping some plumber tape ...

Mike, I've been without wifi for a little while, so couldn't update you. I'm just south of Aberdeen at Stonehaven for tonight and was toying with staying a few days if the sea was ok, but it's not !!..... So I'm heading a bit further south in the morning. Ken. Hi Ken, Sorry just seen your post. You...

Totally agree it's more about being on the water, had a great afternoon on Tuesday, but catching something would be a nice bonus!

Hi Ken, Thanks for the recommendation, I'll check out that site. Good luck with the rest of your trip. If you're passing by Aberdeenshire Thursday, Friday or Saturday next week and fancy a paddle give me a shout. My boat is more river tourer than full sea kayak so we should be similar speeds. Late summer/early autumn fishing

Hi all, I'm after some advise on how to be more successful at kayak fishing now the summer is drawing to a close. I've done a bit of paddling and recently decided I'd like to try the odd bit of fishing while I'm out on my boat, so bought myself a handline. The first time I got two codling and four m...

Re: Which buoyancy aid?

Thanks all for the replies.

I guess ordering online and sending it back if it doesn't fit sounds like the best option. Much as I'd like a trip to the west coast with the excuse of spending some money, it'll be a while before I have the time.

Any other recommendations?

Hi all, It's my birthday coming up and I've been thinking I should really get round to replacing my BA. I've had a look at the discussions through the almanac but am hoping to get some more up to date recommendations for what to get. I'd like something with a vhf pocket (I've got the Standard Horizo...

Sea Kayaking partners NE Scotland

Hi all, I'm based in Stonehaven and am looking for partners for the occasional paddle along the Aberdeenshire coast, could also travel to Moray or Angus. Re: VHF radio

A DSC mayday call will have a bit more range than a voice mayday, due to signal processing, and it is harder for a half-asleep or busy crew to ignore a DSC alarm than a voice over the speakers that can be muffled by engine noise and whatever else is going on at the same time. That was my thinking. ...
