Re: K1 Training for Devizes to Westminister

I did it twice as a stage race as a junior and I was planning to do I this year in K1 until i injured myself. As a junior I was paddling about 5 times per week, mostly interval sessions which were about an hour long (e.g. 8 minutes on 1 off times 6 to 8) then an occasional long session of 2 hours or...

Re: Reading Website Adverts

I'm not sure of any other sites, but if you're looking for a flatwater boat then there's a Facebook group, "Racing Canoe Clubs 'Sales and Wants'" https://www.facebook.com/groups/175548469594046/ that gets a reasonable number of boats posted, probably worth a look. (I think you have to request to joi...

Re: Beginner marathon races

Hi, Hasler races will be fine, its fairly common to see a variety of boats in Division 9 and the boat wont stop you being up near the front if your fitness / paddling is good (whereas youd suffer trying to race a faster race in the higher divisions). Also, having no portages in divs 7/8/9 means weig...

Re: storing k1 kayak

Hi I've left boats on a lawn, tucked against a hedge to stop them blowing away, for 6-12 months before. They seemed to be pretty much fine, but I wouldn't want to do it with a really nice boat. I didn't have any problems with them blowing around even though they weren't secured. A cover / boat bag w...

Re: Devizes to Westminster guestion

The race is organized assuming you will have a support crew, so there aren't aid stations with drinks and snacks like you would get at lots of long/ultra distance running races. So you would have to carry lots of drink - quite possible but harder and slower. In the same way, you can't count on havin...

Re: Marathon Inertia

Just as the heavy boat has more inertia to help it keeps its speed between strokes, that extra inertia makes it harder for you to increase the speed of the boat with each stroke. Also, you can't magically have a heavier boat that sits the same height in the water as a lighter boat, it has to displac...

Re: What cadence for efficiency & distance?

Echoing some of the other comments.. but worry about your technique, the videos ruralweb posted are both good. If you can find someone to coach you a bit it will definitely help, or even just get someone to film you so you can see what you are doing. You'll get bigger efficiency improvements from th...

Re: My fellow racers, I call upon your opinion.

Assuming it's on flat water, the Espada really should be faster, it's longer, it probably has a better seat position (higher) so you'll be able to use more leg drive, weight makes barely any difference (unless you had an extremely heavy boat) so I wouldn't worry about that. If the Espada has gone re...
