Re: Close Call Yesterday

I have also actually paddled through that hole - it does go right through at the right tide height. But OMG, that is one amazing piece of film! The size of those rocks would have done you and your boat some serious damage. The split second decision to back paddle may just have saved your life there ...

Chris, these are impressive voyages and great phots. You do realise I'm never going to be able to post any more photos from North Wales, I'll feel like an imposter.

Re: Did YOU paddle today ?

A Micro adventure, how cool. Is that Vyrnwy Leigh? I love a microadventure! It's Clywedog :) I haven't actually visited Vyrnwy yet, but intend to! Have you paddled there? I usually go to places where I can wild camp, and it looks like all of Vyrnwy's shoreline is privately owned, which can make thi...

Helinox for me too. However as you get to a certain age the ground chair becomes more difficult to get in and out of. I have the full chair and I've fitted the Helinox 'golf ball' feet to stop the legs sinking into soft ground and sand. The feet stay attached to my chair legs permanently, they aren'...

First paddle of 2024 and oh what a perfect day to take on one of Anglesey's gems - known here as 'The Stacks'. It is a committing paddle with various tide races, which require careful tidal planning. However, conditions were perfect and we know the waters well here. https://media.ukriversguidebook.c...

Re: Did YOU paddle today ?

Looks like you had surprisingly nice conditions considering the terrible weather! I was supposed to be paddling across to the Needles on Friday but I don't think it's going to happen because of the high winds that are hitting the UK this week... :( Funnily enough I was looking into Wales as an alte...

Re: Did YOU paddle today ?

Just because its December and minus 2 degrees air temp, doesn't mean you can still 'paddle today'. It was bitterly cold on Sunday but sea conditions along the N.Wales coast were ideal for a paddle round the Great Orme sea cliffs and through the 'fangs' at LLandudno. https://media.ukriversguidebook.c...

Re: Survey about Seals

Bit of a weird survey. I paddle mainly in North Wales and Scotland so I know nothing about the Solent or its seal population, but I've had a go at it because we have a good number of seals around the N.Wales coast and when I was paddling there last Sunday we saw that there are already loads of new p...

Completed - are you trying to find customers for kayak sails? Also agree with Chris Bolton that a very important motivational option has been omitted and that is the simple love for the outdoors and exploring the natural environment.

Re: Irrational fears

Yeh, now that the thread has taken this turn towards inanimate objects, I have to admit that paddling close to fixed structures, like landing stages, piers, pontoons, large nav markers etc - especially when the tidal flow is running past them - makes me nervous, but like mrcharley its not the same w...

Re: Irrational fears

I agree with banzer, you are more likely to be interfered with by very inquisitive seals rather than dolphins, porpoise or whales and a seal is certainly big enough to ruin your day if it decides to climb aboard your kayak - as they sometimes do here in North Wales where I paddle. One of my mates ha...

Thanks for clearing the science up Poke - science or no science, I've seen and rescued paddlers with water in their dry suits and I wouldn't want to be them.

Re: Does a drysuit provide extra flotation?

you start taking on water during a swim out at sea, which is potentially lethal. It potentially increases your risk of cold shock, but that's about it. Water is buoyant in water, even when contained within a suit; contrary to popular belief, a drysuit filled with water will not make you sink. Tell ...

Re: Did YOU paddle today ?

Hi Chris, don't worry, we have been venturing out. Yesterday was a very big spring tide and we had a play in the Menai Straits - for those who don't know, this is the stretch of fast flowing water which separates the isle of Anglesey from the Welsh mainland and is particularly interesting between th...

Re: Does a drysuit provide extra flotation?

I know people who are advocates of "swim testing" their dry suits prior to getting in their boats. This burps the suit and also tests that all the zips are done up correctly, avoiding the horrible experience of finding out they are not when you start taking on water during a swim out at se...

Re: What position are your feet in, does your leg flatten against the hull

I am a very small paddler, and quite new to it also so not yet been in really tricky conditions. So take what I say with a large pinch of salt! In my "neutral" paddling position, my knees are loosely bent and my feet are turned out on the foot pegs. I can push on the foot pegs to help whe...

So let's change the direction of this post as I strongly suspect that the mention of the C to C roll being invented by 'Michael (Micky) Mouse' suggests that someone thinks the C to C roll is indeed a Micky Mouse roll. Therefore the new question is - is the C to C roll a Micky Mouse roll? and if so, ...

But it does take ideally two people to lift the complete system on roof bars on and off the car. Loosen off the two bolts holding the pivot plates onto the base-bars of the Karitec and disengage the plates from teh bars, then you can lift the cradle with the j-bars off the roof fairly easily. After...

There are some lovely bits of Solway mud! But also nice, hard sand. I've also greatly enjoyed those romantic "long walks on the beach", with a kayak. To enjoy this specific aspect of our sport, venture out from Rockcliffe, for Heston and the fabulous coast to the west. Brighouse Bay likew...

Re: Advice on Galloway coast

You've obviously never tried walking on Solway mud. That's true Owen but I live by the Dee and Mersey estuaries so I am very familiar with the potential for the "walk of shame" through knee deep mud if you get your tidal calculations wrong. My local tidal hotspots are so notorious for mud...

Other people will doubtless know more than I do, as I've only spent 4 days on that coast. It was interesting and worthwhile but quite dominated by tidal timing. We started from Rockcliffe, about 10 miles West of your ideal beach. Parking was easy, and it looked easy to launch when we arrived just a...

Advice on Galloway coast

In mid August I am going to stay at a small place called Kirkbean on the Galloway coast. I am going for a relaxing short stay holiday with my wife to do some walking and cycling but as we are staying in a beach front lodge I might accidentally leave my sea kayak on the roof of the van. I know a few ...
