Skeg:
It’s easy to buy a kajaksport skeg slider and a 3mm wire but where do you get the “compression fitting” and a suitable tube from? You can’t get these from the karitek website any more

Re: Carrying a composite kayak on roofrack

I use the dockglide system for composite sea kayaks, bars as far apart as they will go and a bow and stern line down to a towing eye.

Re: (Not so) dry suits, tops/trousers

I added a contoured latex neck to a peak dry suit that had their neoprene cinch-strap neck that would leak during a swim.

It’s not hard, but did take a bit of careful planning and a couple of home made plywood clamping rings to get it neatly fixed in place.

Re: 3 piece sea kayak conversion ?

Well I’m certainly up for building a shrike sometime, it’s been on the “n+1“ list for a while. (That list doesn’t get any shorter and is inversely proportional to the space in my garage) The latch method looks really good, if quite a bit of work, and as stated the latches are a tad pricy. The interl...

Re: Fitting a foam foot rest

Did a 4” foam bulkhead against glass on an Anas Acuta closed cell foam from haymoor products was a reasonable price. Realised I didn’t need the middle bit so on another kayak I used some foam off cuts by attaching blocks just to the sides, this also leaves a gap for the odd leg stretch on a long pad...

3 piece sea kayak conversion ?

I’m considering converting my ndk Explorer into a 3 piece sectional sea kayak.

Are there any good online resources demonstrating other people’s conversions ?

I’m happy working with composites.

Re: Deformation of PE Kayaks

If you put the kayak outside in the sun tomorrow (forecast is very hot) the plastic may go back to the shape it was, it will help if you can provide a bit of force pushing back from the opposite side. I once de-oilcanned a kayak this way, leaving it upturned on trestles in full sun all day with timb...

Re: Avocet vs Sirona

I have now managed to tame that inclination for it to turn into the wind by placing 95% of my kit into my day hatch and back hatch (I do carry quite a lot of kit/weight) and only using my front hatch area to store my small flask and lunch bag. I find that to be the case with many (but not all) sea ...

Re: corroded foot adjustment bolts

If you can get a hacksaw blade, (out of its frame) (not a junior hacksaw) slipped in between the runner and the hull you can saw the bolts off flush, just wrap the blade in tape to make a handle on it of sorts to protect your hand.

I found the bog standard valley style toggle was a considerable improvement over the “ergonomic” toggle (black with a yellow grip) on a p&h Scorpio. (Mk1, things probably improved) The comfiest toggle I have ever handled was a drilled out hardwood broom handle, that was fitted to an old Anas Acuta. ...
