Re: Anglesey tide races
Just about all of the sticky-out bits of the North coast of Anglesey have something tidal going on. It's a bit of a non event on a calm day but I've had a couple of really good 'park and play' sessions at Point Lynas during the ebb, when v strong W/SW winds and big swells were making everything else...

Re: Werner leverlok system
If it's the same nylon Leverlok that Celtic use, I've had one in the middle of my main paddle for a while and have no complaints at all. It's solid and reliable, and sometimes handy being able to so easily adjust the length and feather. I originally bought it because it was the only shaft they had i...

Re: NDK explorer refurb advice
No. I think i could get it up to a very good standard of finish if i was to go ahead and sand with a very fine grit, and then polish. Can I piggyback a question on to this? There's a mention of polishing above too. I'm getting fairly well practised at fairly minor gelcoat repairs to the hull, worki...

Re: Sealskinz gloves.
+1 to the above. Whatever else they're good for, you definitely don't want Sealskinz for paddling. I've tried and failed to get on with PeakUK neoprene pogies, though they were slightly improved by cutting out the silly 'donut' of material meant to seal around the wrist that in my case just made it ...

Re: Celtic Paddles, sea touring pro 2 piece, 700 blades
Hi there, just measured them at 210 - tip of blade to tip of blade when closed, so looking at the website would say they are the 205-215 size. They are right handed. Unless I'm missing something, if 210cm is the minimum length it isn't 205-15, it's 210-something. (The max length will be more than a...

If a Scorpio LV is too big, my guess would be that a Romany Sportive would be too. Options in plastic look very limited, I don't think you'll find anything 'fast'. By composite standards, the bog standard Romany lay-up is tough as old boots FWIW. (And a slightly heavier but even tougher lay up is an...

Re: Fowey harbour permit scheme
She explained that if a person is struggling in the water, the Harbour Authority is responsible for rescuing the person, and the £10 is to cover that cost. Ten quid a day plus ten quid a year to insure against the possibility of having to be fished out of the water within a hundred meters or so of ...

Re: Shed for kayak storage
This is the sea kayaking forum, so maybe it's a 4-seater Taran. ;-) I'd store it on its side too, but I wouldn't be so keen on regularly sliding it in on its side. Not without some cunning system involving rollers or something. Wouldn't mind so much on the hull, as any scratches accumulated that way...

Re: recommendations for drysuit repair?
As it's a Peak drysuit, PeakUK would seem the obvious choice - they do repairs & servicing on their own products (I don't know about anybody else's) at their Darley Dale HQ. It's been my experience that their customer service is excellent. https://peakuk.com/service-prices In the beforetime you ...

One of the presentations that Nick Cunliffe (of Kayak Essentials) made on FB during the various lockdowns was a detailed talk about planning a trip to Bardsey. It's archived on their website in the 'members area'. You might find that's well worth a watch - it's a long video, the talk is about an hou...

Re: VHF /SRC radio course & exam - northern England?
So what can one legally do with a licenced radio but no official Certificate? Mayday only I believe, without 'Authority to Operate' - though the chances of any enforcement if you're using it correctly and not blatantly taking the piss seem incredibly remote with a non-DSC radio. (I don't know about...

Re: VHF /SRC radio course & exam - northern England?
I have a radio and licence and carry it with me. I don't think the coastguard will slap me in irons if I need to use it for a Mayday call and I get to learn how the channels work and general traffic plus how folks can irritatingly use it like a mobile phone. You don't carry the licence around do yo...

Re: Tiring kayak session
But paddling into headwinds is my nemesis - I'm quite large and with a drysuit on, I act as a reasonably-sized sail. I've tried all sorts, including keeping my upper body turned to one side so the wind spills off me rather than smacking straight into me, which I think made some difference but obvio...

Re: Benefits of moving from Sit On Top to Sit In ?
A disadvantage I forgot to include was that sit in self rescue is potentially harder to master than getting back on a SOT. Peer rescue too, as you have to deal with emptying water out of the cockpit one way or another. It's also a valuable skill, especially as a solo paddler, to be reasonably comfo...

Re: Paddling circa Filey both sea and inland with sea kayak
This is perhaps a possibility but would joining a club local to the area help? At present I belong to one based 3 miles from me and another 66.6 miles away and currently I have done more trips with the latter than the former. There's something to be said for joining a club where you want to paddle ...

Re: Paddling circa Filey both sea and inland with sea kayak
My understanding is that it's permitted to take a vehicle down the road at South Landing to launch or recover kayaks but not otherwise.. I don't think there's any specific exemption for kayakers, and I gather that it's only a relatively recent development that there's been any enforcement over the ...

Re: Paddling circa Filey both sea and inland with sea kayak
I guess I will get in mid tide as high tide is 8.15 am and low 2.36 pm so if I am correct the stream will be heading north and the gentle breeze heading south so possibly a little chop? High water in Filey Bay is due to be 8.40am tomorrow (Sat 28th). According to the Northern England 'Jimski' guide...

Re: Paddling circa Filey both sea and inland with sea kayak
There appeared to be plenty of access points to the beach at Filey so I'll hopefully give it a go. Your best bet would probably be to drop the boat off the car at the slipway* by Coble Landing and park a little way up the hill at the side of Ravine Road. (P&D, fiver a day.) * Slip is here: 6P68...

Re: Paddling circa Filey both sea and inland with sea kayak
There's some tidal flow there, but very mellow compared to the sticky-out bits of North Wales. It runs in the opposite direction to the West coast, with the flood stream running South and the ebb to the North ("flood to Flamborough, ebb to Edinburgh"). Slack water doesn't generally coincid...

Re: Sea kayak paddle.
Something like a Celtic Kinetic 650 CF blade (carbon infused nylon, not on website, just ask) on a 2 piece leverlock shaft, 205-215cm, all the adjustment you need in length and feather on a mid size blade should be a great starting point. If for some reason you fancy something fancier in the future...

What do you mean added buoyancy? Your posts above read like you've put inflated airbags into hatches that were already dry. Was the space that you've put airbags in to flooded before? Have you moved other stuff around and altered the trim of the boat?

Re: Please explain kayaking clothing choices
The PeakUK leg-entry zip doesn't suit everyone. A lot of ladies prefer a drysuit with a more conventional entry and a drop-seat zip. The main entry zip on one of those runs from ankle to ankle (there's no separate 'relief' zip), but the problem with it for some depending on their size, shape, flexib...

How about renting a plastic sea kayak? Possibly a bit longer than the touring kayak you might have in mind, but well suited for a longer paddle with an overnight stop on a loch somewhere. If you'll be passing through Oban anyway, this seems like the obvious call: https://www.seakayakoban.com/rental-...

I came across a solo paddler on Bardsey island today who was on his return to Porth Oer with a carrying tide but an opposing wind. Hello. :-) I'm home again now too. I was actually staying on Anglesey, but took a road trip round to the Lleyn to take advantage of the amazingly benign conditions. The...
