Re: Loch Lomond trip report!

I'm pleasantly surprised to learn that the wallabies are still about.

I thought they were a bit of a modern myth like the Staffordshire wallabies that are sadly long extinct. (It seems the last few survivors were finally killed off by the harsh winter of 2010.)

I see them fine. Perhaps it's a browser security setting thing, as they're hosted on a site which is "not secure".

Can you see them here, Owen?

Re: Cliché first post on what kayak to get

The second one here has gone but I'm increasingly attracted to that Islay Venture 12 - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/325997312828. FWIW that seems to me like it'd be fine for a beginner pottering about on a lake as long as they're content to remain so. If you develop some skills (or rediscover some do...

They're easy enough to buy via mail order, as a business selling them commercially there is apparently no problem getting another courier to carry them. Also, as a private individual popping something small and neat like that into a Jiffy bag as a one-off, your "if detected" there is doing...

Re: Composite Virgo

There is a trade-off between speed and manoeuvrability though, albeit not so much that a reasonably strong paddler is likely to struggle to keep up with a club (for example) group. Other than those who might struggle to transport the thing (on land) and want the lightest kayak they can get and the s...

How does it relate to total load? Pretty much a 'hockey stick' curve I think. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/27/Speed-length_vs_weight-resistance.gif https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wave-making_resistance Less than 5mph. Or possibly a wee bit more if it's a 'fast' kayak like a Taran or a...

There are some fairly forthright views or Orcas here too.

Washing breathables in a washing machine has been done since the dawn of Gore-Tex, they recommend a tech wash additive, I think nik wax do a wash and a separate proofer (or used to) and perhaps an all in one too, I can't remember now, I have done this for my Berghaus outerwear since the early to mi...

Re: Cadence or power?

I think it was fairly even on the way out heading into chop & swell but that went out of the window on the return with a following slightly confused sea and wind on our backs and with a pre 2004 Capella which doesn't track too well there were lots of tiring stern rudder strokes. I wonder if the...

Re: Cadence or power?

..I'll put a little more power into the stroke and let the boat glide forwards for a beat before the next. Cool. I don't know the answer, but that has to be worth looking at - it seems quite likely there's a gain to be made there. I've watched a whole bunch of youtube videos since the 'wing paddle'...

Re: Cadence or power?

I'm slightly confused by the idea of reducing cadence but increasing power at the same time - with a given paddle and other things being equal cadence and power increase/decrease together don't they? Unless perhaps you're pausing for a beat between the recovery phase of one stroke and the catch of t...

Re: Reed chillcheater suits vs Drysuits

On the rescue thing, there's clearly a good deal of personal preference in play and - as with the forward paddling - some danger of the "my way is the only way" handbags coming out. Personally I prefer to stay upright, though I can certainly see the advantages in certain circumstances of r...

Really? We still learned to do them last year when I did a safety and rescue course; it's also the method we've always used on the water when dealing with capsized boats. What alternative is there that's better? I think there might be a bit of terminology confusion here - perhaps Owen is thinking o...

Re: wings and sea kayaks?

Thanks, that is the area that I'm questioning I guess, is there extra efficiency when used to bimble? Or are wings so demanding of good technique, and fast enough sideways movement of the blade to generate lift, that an easy paddle in a sea kayak won't get that benefit of extra distance? My gut fee...

Another factor may be that when you want to paddle a Euro blade hard and fast it’s because you are in conditions where you want to enhance balance and support, whereas when you want to paddle a wing blade hard and fast it’s to maintain a high average speed in less lumpy water? There's something in ...

Re: wings and sea kayaks?

Really into rock hopping, yes I do quite a bit of ruddering and draw strokes but don't find them a problem with my wings. Ok, kinetic wings are only semi-wings but their shape isn't a problem. What they are good for is sudden sharp acceleration, as in when you need speed to carry you through a gap ...

Wing paddles, I should have defined a bit better, being the modern post 1980's(?) spoon shaped blades. Also - with apologies for the off-topicness - I'm slightly intrigued by the antique 'wing' paddle you mentioned earlier. Was it also spoon-shaped like a modern wing paddle? What was it made of? It...
