Re: Paddling into your thirties

I stopped paddling age 30 due to bad injuries. Started again at 47. I am on regular club trips and paddling all over the country. I have improved my fitness and got some coaching and I am now paddling better then ever. Experience means that I am tactically better and make better decisions than I use...

Yes. Lhasa and then overland out to Chengdu with a team of 6. We used Windhorse for permits: http://www.windhorsetibet.com/about-us/ they were excellent.

I have been paddling with a range of nationalities in France this year. It make explaining features more interesting. Hand signals and drawings in the mud helped.

You need a sat nav to tell you it's getting dark?
Can you think of an easier way to tell?
You could use a smart watch. I think they can tell you when it is getting dark.

I have always found swimming most useful but that may be due to the way I paddle 😀

Re: Safety

This is a useful if depressing read. I looked at the 2016 entries. The number of times that people were on the water ill prepared in terms of ability or equipment is surprising. There was one example where a swimmer went past two groups of kayakers who did not intervene or even check that he was ok.

It was good to see it work out. This is why it is important to paddle with people who know what they are doing when things go wrong.

Re: First thing you coach on WW

Use the force! Of the water that is, don't fight it use it. In other words, start to read it then get in and play with edges, swimming or paddle strokes depending on the experience of the person. I don't think there is one size fits all but I am not a coach (in this sport anyway).

I have switched to 30 degree after years of 45 degree. It took about 5 minutes to adapt. Wrists feel ok, shoulders feel ok, roll ok. Grade 4 rapids ok. All good so far.

30 or 45 degree feather

Following on from the paddle threads below, I am about to order a new paddle. I have always used 45 degee feather but have tried various options in the last couple of weeks. I adapted quickly to 30 degree but now can't decide what to go for. I am almost entirely river running. I have heard about the...

Re: What Paddle?

Thanks to Girdles for letting me try the VE. I think it is easy to roll with, didn't get any flutter and it definitely looks cool. I will try the carbon powerhouse again and then make a decision.

Re: What Paddle?

I paddle with a Werner power house cranked paddle, I have VE's full carbon cranks same length and feather, however I can not use due to the blade flutter I get using them. Re: What Paddle?

I have been having an e-mail conversation with VE and mentioned the flutter comments and he said this is due to people using a paddle that is too long with a blade that is too big for them.

Options in South Wales this weekend

Anyone been on Afon Tywi - Junction Pool to Dolauhirion this week? Is it worth running? Are there any other good options for the weekend in South Wales. We have a fairly new paddler (has done some G3) with us so we do not looking for anything too challenging but equally we don't want long stretches ...

Probably too much, I have more boats than I need and kit for every weather possibility, safety kit that is almost never used but is necessary just in case. But.... Each trip is cheap because all I need to worry about is fuel, somewhere to sleep, food and occasional parking fees. Worth every penny fo...

Re: Kayaking bucket list

Zambezi? Yes there's some 'grade 5' but people can show you the easier lines, and it's nice warm water if you do swim. Good one to do before it gets dammed. Most of it is 3/4. I am not worried about swimming, I have become quite skilled at that. Roll is pretty bomb proof on a good day though. How l...

What's your budget? That's a pretty key bit of info! Grand Canyon looks incredible, but will cost you muchos $$$! Budget is quite high.
