Re: Van insurance

I have an Auto Campers MRV - same size as a T5 but based on a Ford Transit Custom. I insure with Caravan Guard, I have used them for previous camper vans too over a period of about 10 years. They have always been decent value and good personal service. The only relevant clause I can see in the polic...

Re: VHF licence fee

It is true the coastguard will never ignore a Mayday call, and it is highly unlikely you would be penalised for using a radio without a licence in those circumstances. The best reason for getting a licence and doing the Short Range Certificate course is to make yourself familiar with standard radio ...

Re: Insurance and qualifications

You are correct in that the UK courts will not find in favour of an injured person unless they can prove there was negligence. The problem for competent leaders and instructors is that any person who has suffered an injury may be tempted to take legal action on the off chance of getting some compens...

Not sure if this will fit your requirements, but ‘A thousand miles in the Rob Roy Canoe’ by John McGregor is an interesting read - he arguably invented the sport of canoeing in the UK.

Re: replacing deck bungee

I cut the end on a slant then poke a hole through it with a sailmakers needle, and thread a long bit of whipping twine through the hole. Then tie a knot in the whipping twine to form a loop. The whipping twine is thin but very strong, so the loop can be threaded through the deck fittings and used to...

Re: Sea kayaking paddle buddies wanted Kent.

Let me know how you get on with Rob - there is a good weather forecast for Thursday. There are quite a few sea paddlers around Kent and East Sussex, many of us do not belong to a club and just paddle with friends. Are you restricted to paddling around Thanet, or can you travel further for day trips ...

Sea kayaking paddle buddies wanted Kent.

So hope to get some formal training as soon as a find a Kayak. Love the look of your Rockpool but I'm after a plastic kayak that I can abuse and leave parked up...

Re: VHF radio battery life

Thanks for the warning Douglas, I must admit I have only used it in fairly warm conditions so far. Will be extra careful in winter to conserve battery life.

VHF radio battery life

I thought I would add my tuppence worth to the DSC or not DSC radio debate. I wanted a DSC radio because of the extra functionality over a standard VFH radio, but I was worried about battery life. In the end I took a deep breath and bought a Standard Horizon HX870E DSC radio. I have used it on a num...

Re: Public Right of Way River Access Issue...

The right to pass and repass along a public footpath will include the right to carry any object with you, so long as that object does not damage or otherwise interfere with the land or anything on it. You should therefore be free to carry your canoe, but not to drag it along, put it down on the grou...

Re: Hull layups "core" technology vs single skin

HD must be high density. Can't find out what LRA means, I suspect it is just a proprietary name, but there is some interesting stuff about it on www.taheoutdoors.com/en/production-of-kayaks-and-canoes. It is their top-end, high performance lay-up.

Re: Go-pro's

The batteries in the 4 silver aren't great, I get a little over an hour of non-stop recording. That may be enough to see you through a day if you are only recording intermittently. The LED screen drains the battery faster, but you can switch it off. I carry a couple of spare batteries, they aren't t...

Re: Is Palm gear really that bad ?

Well, I have taken a deep breath and bought Palm Ion salopettes, they fitted better and seemed better designed than the other ones I tried. If they leak, I will be relying on Palm's fabled after sales service ! I hope to get out regularly over the winter, if I remember I will report back in 6 months...

Re: WANTED (for mid August) - Perception Essence 17

There is an American company called Tony's Trailers, they look like excellent products but they will cost over 1,000 dollars delivered to the UK. Not aware of any UK manufacturers. If you need a cheap solution, can't you cobble up something with a kayak trolley and a bit of rope to hitch the bow of ...

Is Palm gear really that bad ?

I am about to buy some dry salopettes so that I can keep paddling through the winter. I was going to get Palm Ion, but there are a lot of negative comments about Palm gear on these forums and it is putting me off a bit. Is their quality control really that bad, or does it relates to one or two speci...
