Re: Perception Essence 17 vs. Wilderness Systems Tempest 170

Ahem, check out the for sale board for my comments on the Tempest. It's a terrific boat, and will fit you well, only paddled the perception once, but I'd have the ws any day. In fact I'd have the ws over most boats out there. There aren't many about in the U.K. So not many reviews out there. In a nu...

Re: Newbie

Join a club, you will be able to try lots of different boats and see which you like the best. Go on a course; if you have 20 years spare, you can teach yourself sea kayaking, but believe me, it's quicker and a lot more fun if you get some help. I always chuckle inside when I hear rubbish paddlers wh...

Re: whats so great about kevlar carbon kayaks

My second hand kayak cost less than the difference between the diolen/unobtanium, titanium/fantasticulium or whatever weird material you are all obsessing about. Not being funny, but Jeff Allen paddled around South Georgia in an Explorer, a boat that is still going strong after all those years, Bria...

Re: Do you know this kind of rescue?

For me heel hook is my default method of getting someone back into a boat. As in most disciplines nothing works for everyone all of the time, and this is where adopting a wide ranging variety of techniques may be necessary. I used the technique earlier this year to deal with a holed and flooded fro...

Re: 1st sea kayak - advice please

And, finally, last Thursday I went on a sea paddle from Lulworth cove with 5 other guys & gals who paddle very regularly at 5* level, i.e. much better than me, and 4 out of the 6 boats on the water were plastic boats! None of them were worried what the boat they were paddling was made of, and all we...

Re: 1st sea kayak - advice please

Oh, and the Romany is what Chris Duff chose to paddle solo around the South Island of New Zealand, and I'd call that a day boat, which kinda proves the point that most boats will fit a variety of purposes, choose comfort above all else!

Re: 1st sea kayak - advice please

Buy cheap second hand boats like this http://www.ukriversguidebook.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=114643&p=752494#p752494 and see if you like them. If you don't, selling them on should be easy, hopefully without losing too much money. I was lucky to work for a sea kayaking company for a while, and...
