Re: River white water training for sea kayaking?
Hi Thank you for your feedback - having had very little sea kayak coaching, I have merely been transferring my skillset from river paddling to sea kayaking, and I have lived quite happily edging / leaning into the curve whether I am doing something dynamic, or a bit of course correction. I did try e...

Re: River white water training for sea kayaking?
Hi Now I know that I may well be out on a limb here, but I really don`t get this idea that you should edge / lean outwards to turn a sea kayak. It is totally the opposite of intuitive - people running, animals running, cyclists, motor bikers - none of them lean outwards to turn, they all lean inward...

Re: OverBoard deck bag for sale
Hi Why has somebody changed the title of this topic by adding an uppercase SOLD to the title. It is ugly, and quite unnecessary as I had already added a post to advise people that the item had been sold. I couldn`t do it if I wanted to, I wouldn`t do it if I could, and I don`t like the fact that it ...

Re: Typhoon fibre undersuit for sale
Hi Thank you for your interest - it says M on the label, which presumably means medium. I see that Wet Suit Outlet have just halved the price on their current stock of them, which I guess means that there isn`t much chance of me selling this one now. Such is life. But good bargains there if anyone i...

Re: Boat for tiny person
Hi The Avocet RM is really in a sort of class of sea kayak on its own - the shorter length, the very rounded chines, and a lot of rocker means that it is almost a creeking boat for the sea. Highly manouverable, very easy to roll, not a lot of primary stability but with so much secondary stability it...

Re: Giving an aging boat a new lease of life
Hi I agree with the comment about compartments being too well sealed, you can see it with the way the hatch cover puffs up or sinks down. A solution is to drill a tiny hole through the bulkhead, so that the pressure inside the storage compartment can equalise with atmospheric pressure outside. Tiny ...

Hi Have a good trip - an awful lot of years ago, as a teenager, I did a 3 week outward bound course at Loch Eil outward bound centre, all paid for by Glasgow council - no idea if they still send people there. We did kayaking in Loch Eil, and lots of trips up mountains. I think the centre was run by ...

Re: Grade 1 / 2 river Glasgow / Loch lomond area
Hi It`s been quite a while since I was in that area, but as far as I can remember - River Balvaig is a grade 1 - River Teith is a very nice grade 2, from Callander to Deanston, but get off before the weir - there is a good get out beside the big layby. Maybe they are a bit too far away from the Glas...

Re: Register your EPIRB
Hi Never mind how long it takes to register - according to the original post it took the various rescue services involved in processing the distress signal several hours to actually locate the EPIRB - whether it was or wasn`t registered isn`t significant. It doesn`t fill me with much faith in a PLB ...

Re: Carrying flares
Hi Thank you to everyone who contributed to this topic - I didn`t expect such a wide reponse, nor did I expect such a diversity of opinion about flares. I had sort of assumed that flares were now well past their sell-by date, but it seems that they are still very much alive. Interestingly, it seems ...

Hi I don`t know how far the information travelled through the country, but a few weeks ago the local press on Anglesey had a story about a sea kayaker who had been rescued by a lifeboat somewhere off the coast of Anglesey. I don`t know anything about what happened, whether they were male or female, ...

Re: Tiderace Moving Bulkhead ?
Hi Some good information there from Aled about how to do it, but I reckon you should maybe be thinking about whether you should be moving the bulkhead at all - for two reasons. The first is that by moving the bulkhead into the cockpit, you are reducing the number of people who can use the boat. This...

Re: Looking for watertight trousers with feet and waist seal?
Hi again
Maybe I should have added that it was stand alone dry trousers that in my experience didn`t work.
I haven`t ever tried the ones that are designed to roll together with a cag to form an effective dry suit, so I can`t say what they are like.

Re: Looking for watertight trousers with feet and waist seal?
Hi Don`t kid yourself that dry trousers are going to keep your legs dry if you take a swim - they aren`t. All the neoprene waist seals in the world aren`t going to keep the water out. I have been there, I have tried them, and they didn`t work. And even worse is dry trousers with socks - because once...

Re: Why bent gate carabineers on tow ropes?
Hi DMM in Llanberis in North Wales make some very nice wire-gate crabs which I use - the gate is made of stainless steel wire instead of the aluminium bar normally used, and the wire is also the spring, so there is no little metal spring to corrode. So they last a lot longer in the sea environment. ...

Re: Picked My New Mk11 Scorpio HV Up Today
Hi A few years ago I was trying to decide what boat to buy, and one of the boats I tried was a Scorpio - however it turned out that it wasn`t the kind of boat I was looking for, so I didn`t take it any further. However the person who owned it told me that the Scorpio had a good characteristic in tha...

Hi Funny how there seems to be a lot more nit-picking about my phraseology about coaches and leaders in my previous post than there is about the essential point of my post - which is that the 4 star and 5 star awards are no longer being used as coaching / leadership awards - so there is now the oppo...

Re: British Canoeing Sea Kayak Coach
Hi I am another paddler who gave up on the coaching scheme away back in the days of Instructor and Senior Instructor, although not only for the same reasons as given above. The coaching scheme went stupid when the BCU stole the 4 star and the 5 star awards and turned them into coaching awards - alth...

Hi I don`t think that Signal Red or Post Office Red would be RAL colours, if you look at the RAL colour charts available on-line, Signal Red is shown, but Post Office Red is not shown. Possible exclusion zone on Anglesey north coast
Hi I recently went to one of the Horizon Nuclear consultation roadshows about the proposed new nuclear powerstation at Wylfa, on the north coast of Anglesey. One of the things that I found out was that Horizon Nuclear are planning to bring a lot of the materials and equipment to the site by sea, rat...

Re: English Holidays and no plan
Hi In North Wales you have also got Llyn Padarn, or Llanberis Lake - right beside Llanberis - no problem with access, it is regularly used for kayaking. And if you are looking for a kayak shop Surflines is right beside the lake. Easy launching from several places along the road outside Surflines, if...
