Re: Help with boat sizing!

Sit in it before buying one, ideally actually paddle it too - on the water you normally paddle. If not buy it secondhand and you can always sell it on. There's a certain fun to just getting on the water and seeing what happens!

Re: Organising trips for friends

Sorry, You're confusing me now - what is your question? I read it that you were talking about "off water" given that you've got a coach for on the water..... Can you clarify?/ Cheers, D Just the off the water bit which seems to be fine. There has been a difference of opinion so just making certain.

Re: Organising trips for friends

I can think of a variety of scenarios where this would not be the case She specifically said it's not for on the river, they have a coach as "Grown Up". I took it to mean for the rest of the trip (bunkhouse, pub, restaurant etc.) In which case, unless someone has specifically agreed to act as the r...

Organising trips for friends

If you organize a weekend trip for a group of mates outside of a club what are your liabilities as an individual off the water? On the water the group doesn't have people capable of leading others although some could look after themselves so we'd use a professional coach. No luck on contact on BC we...

Re: Bl**dy Rolling

That's another one ticked off the list

2nd try and successful!!!

Also in a moment of total insanity I considered rolling on my left as that's the way I capsized - I've done 2 upright rolls on my left before :)

Re: Bl**dy Rolling

My favourite tool for making a beginner more comfortable underwater is a dive mask - not great in a real river but a huge win in a pool. I'm just learnt to panic instead of rolling. Nose clip essential but weaning myself off it slowly. Currently rolling pretty well either falling over on waves or a...

Re: Bl**dy Rolling

Sometimes I can get it right so despite some crappy rolling and a day of avoiding turning over, rocks hurt, I did some practice rolling including one on the left!!! Another day of avoiding - I forgot the nose clip ;) the last day consisted of playboating at MEM and the head games got back under cont...

Re: Bl**dy Rolling

why is that italic?? Hmm bit strange that! Kids do more than fine rolling and unless the instructors and coaches I've worked with are wrong they tend to have less core strength than adults? Certainly they spend most of their time paddling leaning back. Having said that mines rubbish as all those mo...

Re: Bl**dy Rolling

Started using a B/A ages ago after finding that the roll I'd learnt didn't work with a B/A on. Don't really want to abuse my helmet in the pool but fine to use it on the river actually sort of have to! Biggest problem with the weights in the deep end is that it's too far out of my comfort zone and t...

Re: Bl**dy Rolling

No offside roll here - yet :) one side to the other worked for me too although I might have been cheating a bit as the offside attempt was half hearted at best. Not sure where I'd be able to dive for weights. Did have a go at hunt the dropped goPro in the deep end. I found that I float, even diving ...

Re: Bl**dy Rolling

OK start with the good bits - lots of rolling even one swim free session. Last LV session was lots of surfing, rolling and swimming. Still struggling on real rivers but going to have 4 more days to work on that soon. Biggest problem is the almost total lack of a second roll attempt - alright I final...

Re: Bl**dy Rolling

OK so last session was 1 hour one roll no swims. Not quite straight up to the top but close enough. Much happier in places I did't like. Did have to pause a bit after the roll as the nerves weren't happy about the frothy bits and being made to wait to roll ;)

Thanks for the replies. I will check out Aquasure - this sounds like the way forward for me.
Will second Aquasure. My brief ownership of an almost completely dry typhoon repaired with a lot of it was a great advertisment :)

Re: Anyone running new Personal Performance Awards?

Obvious bit was no canoeing. Thats what we did - even found some moving water for a bit of fun. Most was done on gently moving water. They can both plan and run a flat water peer trip no problem so passed the independant paddler with flying colours. Younger paddlers are a bit tricky although they sh...

Re: Anyone running new Personal Performance Awards?

I would be interested to know whether you and your club see the lack of a precise syllabus as a strength or a weakness of the new system? Do you foresee any risk that students who do not pass will find that their mate didnt have to do/show skillX but was still given the award ? I think overall the ...

Re: Bl**dy Rolling

Quick update - variable success - lots when playing not so much when going down the Lee Valley course. Some with a borrowed boat and once with a borrowed paddle just to make it a bit more 'fun'. No sign of a second attempt yet but moving towards a solid first attempt. Even mananaged to remember the ...

Re: How do you break a boat?

Dropping it off the roof of a moving car seemed to work quite well based on the state of the perception scooter in the back of the van yesterday! And having the rafters cut it while unpinning it from Town Falls on the Dee seemed to do a thorough job ;) Turning the trailer on it's side failed utterly...

A friend nose dived hubbys Everest off a small waterfall into a shallow rock. The damage wasn't too bad so it was back on the water the next day :)

Get borrowing/demoing :) she will peobably hate at least one 'suitable' boat, like some and love another. Plus sometimes you just don't fit in some boats. Secondhand boats sell on without loosing too much so even if things change you'll be fine. Or you can get her 2*...... *This could be dangerous -...

Re: Broken nerve

Even the GTS was fine on LV and it an excess of enthusiam or possibly madness I'm going to try a wet session next week. Got 2ish hours so plenty of time for swimming and that elusive second try at a roll. Although bracing, successful or at least upright surfing and and just trying to roll will do :)

My body is poorly heated or poorly insulated Ah! If only! Careful what you wish for, I find the winters much harder since losing weight! Counterintuitively I am usually warmest when apparently wearing not enough warm kit - but only because I'm working hard in a race boat (shorty cagdeck again the l...

Re: Broken nerve

Well the little blighters seem to be ok now. I went for safe but not hiding in the eddies at Ironbridge. Did pretty well at break in, out and ferry glide using the waves even if they were very changeable. This means I can add the Severn to the (quite short) list of rivers I've paddled but not swum! ...

LV went really well. Alright I swam but nerves were pretty good and even tried the wave on the back straight. Plan is pool session on Fiday - lots more rolling and a bit of bracing :) Wednesday LV bottom of the course and try the wave on the back straight if I feel good, pretty sure I will try to roll (this has been going quite well) and if it doesn't work must make a second attempt (next step). Weekend wil...

Re: Your best cock-up (not carnage)

Not telling my fellow paddler to put the car keys on his person rather than in the boat when he mentioned it. I ended up chasing and only just rescueing it on the upper Tryweryn and I really shouldn't be chasing boats on that sort of water.

Broken nerve

All I could see was the possibility of it going wrong and despite reassurance from people who know its going to be fine I just couldn't get past the worries. Totally upset myself and ...
