Re: Bl**dy Rolling

Well I finally managed the right combination of paddle buddy (Rob), boat (I love my burn) conditions (warmish) venue (bottom wave at LV) and me (happy, relaxed, confident) and just ended up rolling a lot. You should have seen Rob's face the first time! Only 2 swims after rolling up still in the hole...

My technique is terrible so far and this doesn't fill me with much confidence! Hope it all goes well for you
the good news is I'm on the really exteme end of being useless at this so there's almost no way you'll take longer or have a worse time :)

Re: Bl**dy Rolling

3 months later and I tap more but still panic. The playboat is going as it hates me and I hate it! Roll is still sketchy, poorly done and unreliable and I now have a great carping technique :) got to look at the small improvements as before I wouldn't take a breath until I was solidly upright or hol...

Re: Not managing to pull a spraydeck

One of my other leaders said he was a second away from hand of god the other day If we are digressing into “how to scare a coach” stories, I did that once at a pool session. I took a polo boat that was nice and easy to roll, took a big breath and had a first bash at a weird Greenland roll I had see...

Re: Not managing to pull a spraydeck

What does everyone one else do when doing spray deck training? One thing I make a real point of doing is to ensure that someone capsizes involuntarily. I often find they're OK when they choose to go in, but freak out when it happens accidentally. My favourite exercise is to get them to paddle forwa...

Coach needed - NWWC - 5th August

After a lovely couple of days on the Dee, decided to start doing some more Summer White Water so one of the group suggested we all do a bit of coaching at the Nene. 'Tragically' too many people got inspired and the coach can only take 6 ;( so anyone free and qualified to coach on Sunday? If all else...

Re: PFD - Do you ever paddle without one?

You get critisied for not using helmets on flat water over here! I think part of that is the type of paddling we do. My view as a role model is always wear a helmet, as in my case, Scouts will see us wearing helmets and think it is the norm to do so, from their first experience on the water onwards...

Re: Not managing to pull a spraydeck

Remember, folks, the weather is the perfect excuse right now -“my legs were overheating”. This happens in all weathers, amazingly I still bump into people who haven't haerd this excellent reason for a capsize :) I prefer there's something crawling/hopping/buzzing in the boat for that extra laugh (e...

Thats because they are experienced and can effortlessly do what beginners have to really think about I think it's more likely they were looking for an excuse for having swum! What a thing to say! Re: Not managing to pull a spraydeck

Very very odd! All my friends say, after swimming, that their decks "just opened", or better "exploded", by them selves. Also the tightest ones, I R Royals, Seals Pro Rands, Peakuk Creek decks, just "popped out", "exploded", " opened by them selves" etc. Thats because they are experienced and can e...

Re: Not managing to pull a spraydeck

I did falling out of a boat at the weekend with and without spray decks in a lake on a lovely hot day with 3 adults and I was shocked on how much faffing around was done before they would go over. All of them were really nervous. That's normal, being that way inclinded I'd say don't even bother wit...

Re: Not managing to pull a spraydeck

I've never managed to get a deck to come off using my knees, even the one I have with a strap across it that is designed for that. It is worth practicing removing your deck without using the loop/tab, you never know when you might leave it tucked in or it might fail when you pull it. You can remove...

Re: Not managing to pull a spraydeck

"Pull" is the wrong word, although I'm not sure what a better one is. It's often necessary to initially push the tab away to unhook the deck from the front of the rim That sort of thing, I've always pulled the loop and it comes off without a problem even with decent decks. So up until someone used ...

I've never known anyone that hasn't pulled their deck or just pushed it off with their knees.... D Can you come kayaking with me? Hopefully it will stop happening! Not managing to pull a spraydeck

First point I've never suffered from this personally. My intro to decks was put this on, pull that if you capsize, off you go, no problem, fell over and out I came. But I've seen a lot of people get stuck and met quite a few more. In charge has been everyone from professional coaches to amateur coac...

Re: Pyranha Ripper Small?

Not that I'm good enough to use it properly but it's quick, easy to roll and pretty stable. The first thing I did with it was launch down a 10 foot ramp with a kicker and go flying landing stern first with a silly grin! Pyranha do have a demo boat and sort of important to demo one.....which you alre...

Re: Lee Valley or Nene Valley

It's worth mentioning that the LV raft guides assume you have booked Olympic rafting for the thrill, and they don't mess about when it comes to delivering one. That is to say that inattentive punters fall out of rafts fairly regularly, and the rafts sometimes capsize completely. The rescue dudes wi...

For me I did well, unexpected capsized was followed by 3 seconds of tapping and a swim. No time for a second go.

Even the burn needs extra foam. How easy is it to move a sweet cheeks between boats?

So out on the river today, mixed results, first moving water roll in about 3 years, practice only and thats the second moving water roll ever so 100% increase :) rolled the playboat on a river which is a first. Far too much dodgy rolling, swimming and head lifting. Impressively I can lift my head wh...

Re: Request for Advice

Grants often need matched funding so get fundraising. I found it frustrating that our district wouldn't allow us to set a budget and buy as we found but hopefully you'll get more flexability so you can get more boats for your buck. Can't get grants at all here so not too familier with the details. G...
