That's clever!
I hope so! I have this pfd but have yet to get the compressed air cartridge as they couldn't ship it from the States. Apparently is the same as used for bicycle tyres.

Re: How much buoyancy do you need?

Best of both worlds? https://kokatat.com/product/seao2-pfd-lvusea Unlike any other PFD, the SeaO2 incorporates a 'hidden' flotation chamber within the body of the vest. In an emergency, the PFD's inherent 7.5 lbs. of flotation can be immediately boosted to 22.5 lbs. by releasing the contents of the ...

Epic Relaxed Touring Paddle, Full Carbon, with carry bag

These are full carbon construction with foam core, lightweight and strong, 210-220 adjustable length, and feather with a lever lock. Super light I think they weigh 625grams. The locking system is significantly better than other makes I could mention - adjusts and separates with ease. A few scuffs a...

Re: Tiderace Tour 17-S experiences

Thanks Chris, he did highlight that 13.5% was at fast pace. Having paddled my partners xplore it is clearly less effort than my own boat at a slow speed too but I wouldn’t know by how much, the difference is discernible though.

Re: Tiderace Tour 17-S experiences

Thanks Jim, I hadn't thought about really pushing myself so that dawdling feels effortless, tsk! There must be off-water ways I can work on that as well, an equivalent to a rowing machine perhaps? Would be a good activity for these dark nights. I have an unpredictable and nomadic itinerary that mean...

Re: Tiderace Tour 17-S experiences

See if you can try a set of VE paddles..... Rog. Which in particular - and would you rate them above others for any reason in particular? Have found Epic relaxed touring carbon blades very comfortable but not terribly powerful. Shuna high angle caused shoulder pain... Time will tell with the Camanos.

Re: Tiderace Tour 17-S experiences

Thanks, it sounds pretty ideal other than turning sideways. Definitely going to organise a shot in a demo boat. In the meantime am experimenting with paddle size to see if that helps speed me up. From one extreme to the other I tried Werner Corryvreckans, so much more power but too big, will perseve...

Re: Tiderace Tour 17-S experiences

Thank you both for information and kind offer to try your boats. I've found there is a dealer not too far away so a test ride should be possible. Great to have the comparison to Romany and xplore-s stability, this is my main concern. I wonder is it as comforting as the Romany in a following sea? You...

Re: Tiderace Tour 17-S experiences

That’s a kind offer, thank you, where are you located?

If the hull is the same chances are they are indeed really similar to paddle. I agree stability is subjective and also really psychological I find!

Tiderace Tour 17-S experiences

Been advised by a credible source that this boat combines stability of Romany and speed/ease of paddling of a much faster boat. Am now curious... being curious can't do any harm, right? If you paddle one (specifically the small size as it seems kayaks vary considerably across sizes despite being the...

Re: Stiff hands

I'm a cold person and often get dead fingers, pressure from gloves is sure to cause it and once it sets in I'm pretty ectothermic - like a lizard I have to have an external source of heat to recover. Last Xmas neoprene pogies were a revelation, despite ice on deck on this bitterly cold morning my ha...

Re: Sea kayak speed

You also mention a Greenlander Pro of which there are a couple for sale at the moment. I would love to know how it compares in Aled's analysis. This was my first boat which I had for many years and despite being even more incompetent back then I found it fabulously fast and effortless. I think the N...

Re: Sea kayak speed

I recently asked a kayak designer about relative boat speeds and he gave me a fabulously detailed and technical reply. It highlighted the different resistance of various boat models and the relative effort required to keep them at a particular speed. In summary his answer confirmed what I was findin...

Re: Paddler size Isel and Alaw Bach

I reckon its sensible to prioritise the smaller version in that case. I don't do many trips and am sure for a weekend the Isel would be sufficient since the Romany is. The Tahe is such a stunning boat. The Romany is quite the opposite and goes over waves with a bounce, I wonder if the Rockpool boats...

Re: Paddler size Isel and Alaw Bach

My gf weighs 65kg and paddles an Alaw Bach without needing to add extra weight to it. I’m probably at the upper limit for it at 93kg and 5’11”, but I’ve paddled it a few times now, including in some interesting sea conditions and it’s performed perfectly. When the time comes for a camping expeditio...

Re: Paddler size Isel and Alaw Bach

Thanks very much for everyone’s help.

The knowledge the Isel is the same width as the Alaw Bach encourages me. Only one place in Scotland / N England to try one I think, will need to make a trip via Ayrshire.

Re: Paddler size Isel and Alaw Bach

Hi. I’m a female Isel paddler. 5’ tall, 75kg. and size 14. Thanks on the rocks, that’s really helpful. I will try to arrange a demo then. Although I think they are like hens teeth to find second hand so it could be expensive to discover that it is amazing. I think I remember previous posts where yo...

Re: Paddler size Isel and Alaw Bach

Thanks Rog. We are a similar height and weight though I expect I carry more around my hips! Good to know the Alaw Bach handles well for you unloaded at that weight, the description of its target being medium to large paddlers made me wonder. I will organise to try both at some point, I suspect I may...

Paddler size Isel and Alaw Bach

If you paddle a Rockpool Isel would you mind sharing your height and weight, and if female, clothing size on bottom half.

Also, if a sub 70kg Alaw Bach paddler could you comment whether you need to add weight for everyday outings.

Thank you!

Re: Romany Classic and Atlantic lv, the same but different?

I get the sense the Isel might be a snugger boat than the Atlantic lv and I'd be shoehorning my hips in. By all the accounts I've seen it is very nice indeed. We are lucky to have a good range of excellent smaller boats, maybe less so if you are really petite I guess, but just below average and ther...
