Re: Bamford to Baslow - Peak District

“they have put up new signs on the trees stating no canoeing, no non member fishing and no swimming“ Similar signs have been in place for a long time - they used to also include “no picnicing” and also the wording “police notice” on the top of the sign but I managed to get thoses words removed. Igno...

River Derwent / Matlock Bath

Me and my lad went for a swim last night, artist corner to the start of the slalom course.

About 100m before the start of the slalom a very strong smell of sewage.

It has been reported to the environment agency.

Re: Do you carry a BCU Membership Card on the river ?

How can British Canoeing walks away from it? They get paid to provide insurance for when you are negligent - if you follow all sensible risk management best practices then you won’t be sued and insurance won’t be needed. The last time I read the British Canoeing insurance details I didn’t see anythi...

“I think paddling quietly along a waterway and casting a line into it is about the same level of noise and disruption to the wildlife. ”

I suspect the fish might have a different opinion!

Re: Peak district rivers and access

The frustrating thing is, the fishing clubs know we can only paddle when in full spate, which always coincides with closed fishing season (and evening if it’s in season, they don’t fish in full spate) - so Peak District rivers seem ideal for a sharing arrangement where we will not clash at all.

Re: Peak district rivers and access

I think the words are changing, but I seriously doubt undisputed access to rivers particularly in the Peak District will improve in my lifetime. The official word from the Peak Park is they would like to see better access, but they are doing nothing about it. I wouldn’t be surprised if they also say...

All rivers are too low at the moment - you will probably be waiting until next winter before they are high enough.

Re: British Canoeing - Trespass Policy

One thing I've always wanted to know is exactly which part of the trespass law do they think we are breaking? As I understand it trespass against property is split into 3 parts: 1. sub surface ie digger under someone else's land 2. Surface ie touching someone else's land 3. Air space ie flying above...

1st aid kit with a small pair of snips for cutting the barbs of discarded fishing hook - a friend went under a tree and got one through his thumb - he didn't have snips with him but since hearing how he pulled it out, I've always paddled with snips since

Re: Kayaking as a new parent

Caveat, I'm not a parent. But what I do hear pretty consistently from friends is that while they are babies things aren't so bad. It's when they hit school that keeping up with the hobbies becomes difficult, and in some cases impossible. When you've got a kid who doesn't want to go near water and n...

Re: BCU fees to rise in 2017

Buy some outdoor gear from Cotswold and get 10% discount by presenting your BC card. The discount is sometimes higher. Offset your saving from the cost of joining the BC and it does not seem excessive. Or go to most other outdoor shops and pay 15% less than Cotswold and save your BC membership to g...

Insured for what? Trespass is a civil offence, the only expense would be for damage, which your standard insurance covers anyway

Don't get me wrong, it is good that it is specifically mentioned, but I suspect everyone was already covered
