I owned two Giros and have been looking for another (and the original one I owned) for years on and off. I have never seen one come up for sale. Unfortunately all my photos of it have been lost.

Re: Cockpit rim repair

You could use something as a former to bridge the soft section,a piece of copper or stainless tubing bent to the correct profile or even a length of flexible hose. I've had success using a length of garden hosepipe as a former. It helped greatly in making an entire replacement carbon-kevlar cockpit...

FS: Rockpool Alaw

As the subject says ... I'm selling my Rockpool Alaw. Looking for around 1250, which seems to be the going rate. I'm reluctant to advertise on ebay, because that seems to be a good way of meeting odd people. There's the usual minor launching scratches, but it's just been in for a gelcoat recondition...

Found: Paddles - Pocklington Canal

Set of paddles found at the Pocklington canal (E. Yorks) last weekend.

We've tried all the local clubs, including ones that have had recent trips there, but nobody has come forward to claim them.

Any takers?

A quick story from the early 90s. I used to drive a Skoda - not the modern Volkswagen clone, but the original Soviet Bloc, reject from the tractor factory, cardboard is an acceptable substitute for steel, monstrosity. Well, the kayak stayed attached to the roof bars, the roof bars stayed attached to...

The Menai Strait?

Not technically a river, but some fun moving water. Not rain-dependent either!

I also thought this post must be a wind-up. If you're feeling off-form when you're 30, the problem is being out of practice - not your age. In terms of what your body can do / take as you get older, you may enjoy watching someone around 20 years older than yourself surfing: https://www.youtube.com/w...

Re: Feather angle recommendations

I learned to paddle right 90º in 1982 - in those days the kayaking world appeared to be about 95% right 90º, 4.5% left 90º and 0.5% something else (although sprint & marathon may have had lower angles but I didn't know anyone who did that then). In about 1992 I had wrist trouble on a week long trip...

Not a Taran, but an Alaw (the big one, not the Alaw Bach!)

Planning on selling mine shortly -- close enough for you?

Check the tide tables & choose your day. It needs to be at least 9.6 at Liverpool for the wave to be worthwhile.

Don't know much about the rivers, but there's definitely surf in the area (though not Tenby itself unless conditions are spot on). Asking the question on the surf forum might get some good suggestions.

I'm watching this thread with interest. Any tips / plans would be appreciated (I'm fairly confident working wit...

Re: Anybody paddle in the dark?

Yes - flat water quite regularly, and surf from time to time. Not much to add to the above, apart from checking beforehand that lights are completely waterproof. Lights on both yourself & the boat are a good idea. A couple of glowsticks taped to the paddle make it easy to find if necessary (& make f...

A second vote for Dominatrix as the worst boat name. My 11 year old paddles one & it's ideal for him (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fHAujqMFQE). When he first got it, he rapidly worked out that I didn't want to explain what the name meant. Of course, he decided to ask everybody else instead - gra...

Surfboats & forward finishing rolls are made for each other! If you're really attached to (say) a standard screw roll, try pushing forward into a low brace as soon as you're up.

I've met people from Leeds club out to sea along the coast there (Scarborough / Flamborough / Filey sort of area). Alternatively, there's various clubs between Leeds & the coast that do a lot of sea paddling. Feel free to pm me for more info if you're interested.

Sorry, edessex, but I agree 100% with rainshine. Given how you describe yourself, & what these boats look like, I think they would be absolute deathtraps for you. Just from their shape, they don't look that stable either. An alternative suggestion: you seem happy to take on DIY projects, so why not ...

I do this from time to time. It's open to big boats (narrowboats / barges etc.) & the Rosie&Jim people have got plenty of guides to it (e.g. http://www.jim-shead.com/waterways/river.php?wpage=DRWT). There aren't any access problems on the water itself. The guy with the house on the island at Sutton-...

I guess maybe ear plugs are a good idea to stop you needing to get them drilled out, although I've never tried them I imagine I'd get annoyed at having to faff about taking them out every time I wanted to hear and putting them back in for every rapid. There are some earplugs designed to allow sound...
