Re: Advanced Whitewater / "5 star" logbook/assessment

Well, I'm back from a 4 day beasting in Dartmoor - 2 days of Advanced Whitewater Leader, and then 2 days of Advanced Whitewater Safety and Rescue. As 2 of us on the AWWSR had done AWWKL we got to do most of the leading on the AWWSR days which was more good experience of leading in that environment, ...

Re: Low Force

I think you're all talking about the same feature. It seems to go ok, but the lower it is, the more likely you are to hit rocks. Only paddled it the once myself at medium levels. As I understand it, the "jacuzzi pool" is the left hand drop of the main fall, and the "chicken chute" starts higher up,...

Re: BBC River Walks

Good shout! Great to see some of the rapids we know and love from different angles. Not sure I'll be taking up White Water Swimming on the Tees up as a hobby though!

I know the producer Matt, and I'm sure his dog Barney had a great time making this series!

+1 for Kayak (for anyone else reading who doesn't already have it)
+1 for White Water Kayaking by Oli Grau... a small number of elements don't fully reflect current paddling practices but it's still a very good book on WW technique

Actually, looking at the fence in the background that could well be the other side of the river at the top of High Force

Re: Paddling Near Birmingham

The upper Don, from Deepcar to Oughtibridge North of Sheffield deserves a mention at Grade 2/3 ish too. It's probably easier to catch than any of the true spate streams, but even so you only really get a few hours after the rain stops. Good shout - I'd forgotten about that - and really ought to do ...

Re: Paddling Near Birmingham

You need high hills for grade 3 or above. If you look at a relief map of Britain, you'll see that the area around Birmingham is not very hilly. Shropshire and the Peak District are hilly regions that are closer to Birmingham than Wales, but for some reason neither has good white water, as far as I ...

Re: Infinity Wezzit

Looks a little bit like a could be an unusual camera angle of Dog Leg on the Tees.... OR the sneaky river right right right line on the same rapid.. but then the water looks the wrong colour.

Advanced Whitewater / "5 star" logbook/assessment

Hi everyone, Looking for guidance from anyone with experience of the AWWKL / 5* award, to help me decide if it's realistic for me to achieve a sufficient level of paddling to go for this award I see that 'Advanced Water' is anything up to and including Grade 4(5) and that a suitable candidate would ...

Although full information isn't out yet I've had a couple of discussions with BC over the last couple of days and can answer a couple of these... - 2* now called Paddle Explore, no longer dual discipline so it might be feasable to assess it without a whole weekend The awards are no longer based on a...

Re: Krab on a Throwline?

I keep a krab on my throwline. That way I always have a krab and a throwline together if I need them (e.g. in a hurry e.g. live bait). Of course if I'm setting safety on the bank I'll remove the krab. If I'm ever in a situation where I have to use the throwline but don't have time to remove the krab...

Empty – Red. i.e. universal colour for no go. Low – Yellow. Bit meh, but paddleable (also between red and green on the traffic light system) Med/High – Green i.e. universal colour for go – these are the best conditions! Huge – Purple (warning, but not a no go) Too High – Red (again, I think – i.e. ...
