Fenix HL 55. They also do a slightly more expensive version with a built in USB charger. I do all of my caving with this light, waterproof, robust, various light levels with a superboost.

Re: River Shiel to Loch Moidart Water Level Summer

We didn't have any problems with depth, and some fully laden canoes got there just before us. They portaged down the right bank. I don't think that Scotland has had it as dry as other parts of the country. This set of web cams might give you an idea of water levels: https://www.farsondigitalwatercam...

Re: River Shiel to Loch Moidart Water Level Summer

We did this trip in summer (but not after the type of drought we have currently. We reached the rapids close to low tide and took out just above the top rapid and portaged easily along the true left bank into the loch. This was with fully loaded sea kayaks. We didn't use a trolley as there were thre...

Re: New UK legislation on knives

I was trying to give an example of the 'just cause' situation. As far as I am aware the Scout Association do not actively encourage the carrying of sheath knives in public. Here is their current policy/advice. Knives should be considered as a tool and treated as such. Those who are going to use them...

Re: New UK legislation on knives

I have brought this to the notice of UK Scouting and await their response. Talking about this to a policeman friend last night he said that, as it stands, blades of less than 3 inches aren't a problem (Swiss Army knives all fit this category I believe), that the new legislation is aimed more at curb...

Re: Roof mounted carrier

I use these: http://www.ajkayakequipment.com/foam-kayak-cradles They are shaped foam cradles that conform to the shape of the hull. I fasten them into place on the roof bars with a velco strap. They are narrow enough to get two boats side by side on my roof rack. I'm very pleased with them and they ...

Re: When the North Sea's too rough....

We have paddled on Ullswater a couple of times, but don't underestimate the wind/waves. Early last June the wind had blown all of the portaloos on the camp site over. On one trip we paddled from Waterside House. They let us park the car there overnight for 5 pounds. We then paddled to Side Farm camp...

Re: Looking for watertight trousers with feet and waist seal?

I have a pair of the kokatat dry trousers in their less breathable fabric, although they seem to breath ok anyway. They have fabric feet which I prefer. However, during rescue practice on Carsington Water in the autumn they started to fill up with water after less than 5 minutes holding onto the sid...

Re: 210 replacement battery

With such a critical piece of equipment I think that I would rather trust the manufacturer to replace and check the battery. I'm not saying that this is the case here but the last thing that you want in your plb is a dodgy Chinese recycled battery.

Re: Fitting Bilge Pump to Delphin 155

I haven't read all of this thread so apologies if I am covering points already made. I have been using a Yuasa 1.2 amp hour gel battery but, as it sits inactive for quite long periods (due to a rubbish summer) it has come to the end of its life. I have replaced it with a set up from Mark at https://...

Re: Rescues and letting go of the boat

I would imagine that it would be possible to connect the tether from the boat to either a belt or the spray deck with an Italian hitch tied into a large karabiner. The hitch can be locked off with a half hitch so it would be easily released if necessary.

Piel Island parking

A small group of us are planning to do two overnights at Piel Island, with a paddle around Walney. Can anyone recommend a spot in or near Roa Island where we could safely leave a car and trailer? Many thanks.

I have mounted that model of compass onto the front hatch cover using 3M Marine adhesive, and added a reflective lubber line so I re-fit the hatch cover the correct way.

Use one of the camp sites on the east/south shore of Ullswater, just along the road from Pooley Bridge to Howtown. Have your evening meal in the pub in Pooley Bridge and launch straight from the site into Ullswater.

Fourth Element make a balaclava from their Thermocline material. http://fourthelement.com/technical/thermocline/

Very stretchy but be aware that they come up VERY small. I have an XL on my medium sized head and it is still a quite a tight fit.

Re: kayak bag

I made one from fabric designed for car and caravan covers. I sourced it from Ebay. I cut it into a rough kayak shape and put a long zip in the side which runs about half way ( sourced from Pennine). The boat slides in and then gets zipped up. There is a draw cord at the opening. It is not a thing o...

I don't know about winter, I do that in summer! I tend to dress for the swim as I haven't mastered the art of rolling. I haven't tended to overheat.

Re: summer paddling gear

Another vote for 4th Element thermocline. Yes, the long john does lack a relief zip but half an hour with a sewing machine (or take it to a cleaning shop such as Johnson's that does zip replacements) and you are sorted. As stated, it is warm, wind proof, dries quickly, is nowhere near as sweaty as n...

Re: Air Bags

My first aid kit and bothy bag (well wrapped in dry bag and polythene), live in the space between the bulkhead and the foot brace (I have a Rockpool so it is a large, full-width foot brace). This fills some otherwise dead space and reduces the volume a bit and also makes them very accessible.
