Re: Got me a SOT beach toy...

Don't fall out? :-) Personally I don't use a leg leash, mine is clipped to my pfd and about 8ft of rope that is carefully tucked away and deploys itself if you go in. I only use that when I'm alone otherwise I use just a paddle leash and my drills mean I never let go of the paddle. People with Skis ...

Re: Swanage Rescue

[url]http://www.swanagelifebgelifeboat.org.ukatest.asp?section=Rescues&subsection/quote] Looks like they just needed a ride. Swanage is just 10 miles from starting point (straight line)...This is exact reason why paddlers should take care of safety issues before they take off and get cold half way....

Re: Channel crossing - the sit-on-top boys made it!

Thanks guys. Our hard training and planning paid off. For those interested it was 77.3 miles in 19hrs 21 minutes........the most astounding fact was that one of the team was in a Hobie. Another bizarre fact was that myself and Dr Mike Stroud only drank 2 litres of fluid?! Unbelievable considering. I...

Re: Touring sot recommendations

Is there a reason you discounted the Scupper Pro? It eats the miles - a few weeks ago I paddled 38 miles with no problems at all and fish off it easily. One of the best plastic SOT's there are IMO. Of course now I have a Stealth she is going to get dusty. I have paddled over to the Isle of Wight a f...

Durdle Door 3rd May 2014

I recently received my new Fishing/paddling ski after a long wait for it to be built in South Africa and was itching to try it out. I wanted something fast and stable so I can hit the offshore marks like the Needles etc and was very pleased with how it handled the swell and horrible lumpy return jou...

Re: Paddle size

If identical techniques then yes but can also be limited by hull speed of the kayak. They potentially will tire quicker though. Paddle size doesn't always mean faster. I've got both those paddles and the Corry makes me go at least half a mile an hour faster. People used to advise me to use the shuna...

An evening with Dr Mike Stroud (OBE)

For those living near Portsmouth I will soon be confirming that Dr Mike Stroud will be doing a talk about his unsupported record breaking crossing of the Antartic with Sir Ranulph Fiennes as well as other truly amazing feats. He will be doing this in aid of our charity paddle over to Alderney ( http...

Re: Clothing advice for endurance paddling please...

Thanks - I definitely like the look of the Reed shorts - I want separates so I can go to the toilet easier and as it's through the night I need to be able to add/remove layers easily which a bib/drysuit would make tough. So do I need dry trousers (to wear on top if I get cold) with built in socks or...

Re: Clothing advice for endurance paddling please...

Thanks for the reply, I had seen the threads but as im open to the elements more I thought id ask peoples opinions. I can't make scuppers for the seat so apart from using a sponge might be sat in water. Also although there are scuppers where your legs go there is always a bit of water there.

Clothing advice for endurance paddling please...

Hi, I will be completing a charity endurance paddle this summer on a sit-on-top during which I will be paddling for about 18hrs. Usually I wear a drysuit - I have a thin one for paddling and thicker if I go fishing but the longest I have paddled for is about 8 hours solid. As I will be doing this fo...

That is concerning; do you know where 'Rule 28' could be viewed, please? No I don't, I dismissed it to be honest as there are companies like Full Throttle doing this all the time so I presumed that as they were advertising it openly they were doing it legally. I will have to look into it further, i...

The biggest issue I find is continuity. Like anything else it is down to who you speak to at the time. When they change shifts there really doesn't seem to be any hand-over as such. You can phone in a detailed plan and upon phoning in to say you are back safe and well they generally don't seem to kn...

Re: 2 boats or 1?

I've got a Greenlander Pro which is my first SINK kayak (I paddle SOT's normally). As mentioned it is interesting to paddle. The hard chines make it dead easy to edge, but feels a bit tippy to start with. HOWEVER if you continue to lean, as the flat edge comes into play it is literally like you are ...
