Re: "New personal performance awards" - Huh?

to me, sea safety, weather, first aid, planning, group awareness, navigation and decision making are all skills. Whether we talk of common sense, judgement or whatever... there's something we've all recognised over the years about independence needing expertise (easily assessed skills) to be backed...

Re: "New personal performance awards" - Huh?

I am seeing a lot of reference to "skills" here... and in a way, I'm ok with that. No-one should be dismissive of skills... and to take one example, "sea kayak skills" do feature in one of the six sections of the new Sea Kayak Award. One sixth of the new Award includes: Skill: Effective forward padd...

OK - this really isn't so very hard - especially as everything offers pretty much what it says on the tin! Sea Kayak Award - Independent for successful days in forgiving coastal environments (up to force 3 & 1 Knot tides); Coastal Sea Kayak Award - independent in less forgiving coastal environments ...

Re: Left-handed paddlers

Fundamentally, whatever someone uses he / she will come to see as "natural" - the hard bit isn't learning with any one piece of kit (e.g. a lefty or righty paddle, a specific feather) - the hard bit is changing later on (especially with wing paddles).

Re: Left-handed paddlers

Right handed people quite commonly do better with what the rest of the world thinks of as a "lefty" solution: most notably the case in cricket (dominant top hand) but can be true in Canoe / Kayak.

Re: Define Canoeing

Canoeing is a generic term covering pretty much any human or wind powered craft. It's actually easier to highlight the few categories of craft which are NOT canoes: rafts, rowing boats, dinghies, yachts and motorised craft, etc.

Ok - White Rose Canoe Club is possibly the best option in Leeds for getting started... but Leeds CC is the dedicated WW kayaking club. If you want to pop down to us at Pennine you'll also be most welcome, and we should be able to help more with open canoeing. Other clubs local to you include West Yo...

Curiously, those who have taken opportunities and practiced effectively over extended p...

In two cycles of British Canoeing's "Girls for Gold" programme, girls with a Martial Arts background (a) got through to being part of the final half-dozen who got funded places on the programme; and (b) made the initial running in the high-kneeling boats ahead of girls with outstanding backgrounds i...

AALA could not be clearer: "if you do not provide licensable activities to young people in return for payment then you do not need a licence" - so that bit is easy. If you are operating under the insurance provided by British Canoeing membership you should be aware of any expectations... but this ce...

Re: British Canoeing Awarding Body

Funding for BC is set out in the Annual Report... which notes that 55% of British Canoeing's income comes from UK Sport and can ONLY be spent on Olympic and Paralympic programmes... and if there's been any meaningful trickle-down to "coaching" (as everyone else understands it) that's not been overly...

BC membership gives you insurance for what you do... which is worth the fee even if you place no value on anything else offered... and the bolt on boat insurance is the best I have encountered.

The River Aire was in the classic 100 Paddles book and there's a published canoe trail for one stretch. For experienced canoeists, most of it is a quite reasonable proposition at most water levels... but you've got hazards, including some big weirs. Leeds Canoe Club is based on the banks of the Aire...
