Re: 'Rapids' on OS map

I've had (unconnected) dealings with OS in the past and they strike me as a very surprisingly imaginative and well connected organisation. If someone has the energy I'd suggest that a direct approach should be made (rather than seeing them as the faceless organisation they may have been in the past)...

Re: Not managing to pull a spraydeck

No you're not unlucky. I'm not a prolific paddler. I've spent most of my time in 'safe' water (often still water). I've seen this happen 3 times that I can remember. All in still water. 1) First proper class I taught where I was in charge of the class. All went well except this. Last person doing th...

Re: Direct mobile to mobile communication?

Certainly an interesting link. You can skip Facebook and the article and go straight to their website: https://www.gotenna.com/ Proves people are thinking about this. Not worth exploring further in my view until its made itself a market and proven the technology a bit - at least not at $150. Fundame...

Re: Direct mobile to mobile communication?

@TechnoEngineer - meant to ask - having experimented with Mobile Tornado - what were your conclusions? The website is way beyond the level of complexity I was considering (don't understand half of it) but certainly indicates that others are thinking the same thoughts... we have lots of people wander...

Re: Direct mobile to mobile communication?

Happy to concede that it may be that mobile-mobile solutions end up reinventing the wheel. Happy to concede that for polo there may well be better solutions. Happy to concede that anything where we have to build something electronic for basic operation may not be worth the effort. BUT I still remain...

Re: Direct mobile to mobile communication?

Fair comment - but even for polo I'm wondering about non-internet non-mobile-signal solutions. Personally I use the internet on my mobile very little - or alternatively I may have a work mobile with me that it wouldn't be ethical to use for internet access for this kind of thing. But I'd accept that...

Re: Direct mobile to mobile communication?

The DW marshals had a WhatsApp group this year .....
WhatsApp uses an internet connection so that would miss the point of my question (which is about what's possible when no main phone signal, and therefore no internet connection, is available).

Re: Direct mobile to mobile communication?

Mark - using a Raspberry Pi an interesting idea. Was the idea to power this from a portable battery? I've not looked up the links yet, but I guess that this might make a big difference to the reach of signals. At this stage I'm not personally looking to do this really - just drawing people's attenti...

Direct mobile to mobile communication?

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with using any direct mobile-to-mobile communication systems / apps? Methods of getting smartphones to talk direct to one another without an ordinary external mobile signal. I was playing canoe polo recently and unsurprisingly referee conversations are often sh...

Re: What cadence for efficiency & distance?

Hey - thanks for that. A very clear and helpful answer. Given that I'm only doing this for fun I'm using club equipment. Consequently I'm choosing the longest wing paddle available in the club which I suspect may still be short for me (I'm at something around 185cm height - i.e. 'tall'). It's time I...

What cadence for efficiency & distance?

Can anyone advise on what kind of cadence (i.e. strokes per minute) I should be looking at for paddling a k1 sprint/marathon type boat - looking for *efficiency over kilometres* not speed in a sprint? I'm exploring the use of my club's sprint k1 kayaks. This is mainly for the fun of it as at my age ...

I was astonished by a member of my wife's family who insisted that it was morally right that dvds were copied and distributed to friends. Re: 2 star - why canoe and kayak

I've never been completely convinced that it's right that 2* involves both - but on balance I think it's a good idea. I am completely convinced that there are positive and strong arguments in favour of this - countering some strong arguments against. I'm easily a better paddler for being pushed into...

Re: purpose of edging a kayak

JonT - I like your descriptions, and I can see that the wave catching up on a boat probably has some effect, but I think I disagree that this is where directional instability comes from. The pencil analogy is perfect - with a very sharp pencil you aren't going to get it to balance (in a real world s...

Re: purpose of edging a kayak

I've carried out some very limited experimentation. There are many many faults in the basic experimental technique of course, but to my own satisfaction I think I've proved to myself that... a) In long boats (various very different designs) I can't make the boat behave any differently, starting from...

Can I humbly offer up what I think should be the biggest learning point in terms of coaching behaviors, in a paddling environment, for those who are relatively new to coaching, and before people go anywhere near any theory, which is this... If it's not working it's my fault not theirs. And as a supp...

Re: Suggestions to make teaching forward paddling more fun!

I've taught many groups of people in many different situations (outside of paddlesport). I'd say the first thing to remember is that any group of people has a personality of its own. This personality may not be easy to predict... in that it doesn't follow that a group of cheerful people make a cheer...

Re: T-rescue

Remember this: it's not strength that does it, it's teaching your body to do a specific movement. You do this in the video briefly at 1:03 and again at 1:04... that moment when the boat turns a bit while you stay still. A good coach could probably teach you this in 15 minutes or so... if those aroun...

Like many others I'm utterly puzzled ...

Seeing the words "hip flick" always fill me with despair. The term is totally inadequate. It doesn't describe what to do with your hips. It does describe how you should do it though, apparently there should be a "flick". According to Merriam Webster, a flick is a sharp jerky str...

This is proper semantics. You are just saying the same thing, just in more bland language. It is not as if it was offensive to begin with. You're starting to go down the management speak rather than plain English way so saying things here, or are just a bit over sensitive. Not an unfair point and I...

I say that we do need all to be debating this - that it's clear that there are issues worth discussing in terms of gender and paddling - BUT that clumsy language and clumsy thinking means that lots of people undermine the (perhaps valid) points they want to get across. The linked article at the top ...

If you are relatively new to moving water then probably the main thing will just be time and familiarity. In this circumstance then time in a swimming pool (warm!) playing games with the boat, learning to roll perhaps, but just finding out how it behaves when you don't mind going into the water so m...

This is my experience too. I think part (only part) of the problem is that when we are with more experienced people, in general, we have less control of the situation. It's harder to say "I don't want to.. even though you think I should..." than "I don't think I should lead you... eve...

Lots of good comment here already, but my main observations (from lots of coaching)... You might learn on your own easily - or you might never learn that way. You might learn easily through coach A's coaching - or you might never learn with coach A - try coach B - C, D if you have to - but bear in m...

On a river I use pogies, but as it hasn't been said yet consider - if only briefly - bog standard rubber washing up gloves. I use a doubled up pair for canoe polo. They look very silly - but tucked into my cag stay relatively dry inside. They don't keep my hands super warm - but seem to allow them t...

Far too much seems to be the answer. I have always coached beginners on grade 2 water (I have never had any interest in coaching on flat water, nor do most of my students have any interest in learning on flat water), and I would expect that after about 6 hours on grade 2 they were ready for grade 3...

I doubt that many avoid it. I'd second the suggestion to try playing polo - for the very reasons giv...
