Re: Recommendations for VHF radio and PLB
A couple of friends of mine work for the coastguard, one is also lifeboat crew. They are both sea kayakers. They both say PLB will get an instant response as soon as they receive the signal. They will send the world and his wife. They also both say they receive many many broken radio transmissions a...

Re: Steve Backshall in Greenland
I've been on a mountaineering expedition with Steve Backshaw back in 2006. He was very strong and did summit, But he never beat me at base camp scrabble! I've also paddled in Greenland a couple of times with the same guide. Had a couple of very interesting conversations with him last year about Stev...

Re: Hatch rim screws, catch fabric etc
I've got a couple of boats with the same thing. I went with dome nuts as it means I can still easily remove them later if I ever need.
If you don't want domes what about just get some shorter bolts?

Re: Rudder and skeg on the same boat
As always, skeg vs rudder is a can of worms. It doesn't have to be and shouldn't be. Both work very well for what they are designed for. Both have their limitations. There's a lot of nonsense spouted about both, usually negative. I've already said I have a boat with both. I also have boats with just...

Re: Rudder and skeg on the same boat
I've got a Mega Viking with both a skeg and a kajaksport rudder. The previous owner had it spec'd like this when he first ordered it. I use the rudder for long A-B journeys, crossings etc or if kayak sailing and the rest of the time, so most day trips, I just use the skeg, although the boat tracks s...

Re: Greenland Paddles - suitable for a new kayaker
I think we're all looking at this from the perspective of people who learn't and have mostly paddled with euro blades. If you asked the Inuit they would probably say learn with a GP and try euro if you want to. I'm pretty sure if they learn with a stick and like it they'll progress just fine, as the...

Re: Paddlock vs Leverlock
I have two Celtic paddles one with leverlock and the other with padlock.
I much prefer the convenience of the leverlock system and if I was buying another paddle this is what I would get.

Re: Valley Hatch Toggles
Do you mean the bit of elastic cord with a white plastic clip at each end?
Easy enough to make up your own with some clips from Ebay or Amazon.
I binned my original Valley ones and replaced with some 2mm dyneema cord, tied to hatch cover and deck line, as they kept unclipping on their own.

Karitek - is everything ok?
I've been trying to contact Karitek since Tuesday.
Nobody's answering the phone and no reply to emails or responding to phone messages left.
I hope everything is ok as they're usually very good.
Is anyone else having problems or can shed any light?
Thanks
Steve

No longer for sale as I've sold 2 other boats instead.
I would delete the post but can't work out how to do that.

Wanted - Whisky 16 preferably Prolite
As above,
I've got a standard Whisky 16 and love it, but it's been pretty well used now and I'd love a "younger" one and Prolite would be great.
Based in Somerset but will travel.

Re: Entry Level Surfski Wanted!
The V8 hull is very similar to the Epic 18X which I found slightly less stable than the Epic 16x, the most stable is the 18x Sport. I bought the 16x as I didn't want a Taran and also wanted a fast 16ft ish sea kayak, as I find in the real world they're just as fast as 18s but more versatile. When I ...

Re: Entry Level Surfski Wanted!
I was asking a similar thing last year. Coming from sea kayaking I wanted a "beginner" ski. Please bear in mind stability in ski terms is somewhat different to sea kayak stability. What they class as stable is like sitting on a log! I have an Epic 16x kayak so wanted something that would be a like a...

Re: new from British Canoeing
I've replied and told them exactly what I think of it (for what that's worth). Seems like taking lots of money for very little in return to me, as well as a U turn on making the most of very experienced and highly skilled paddlers who have chosen not to get bits of paper! Our club is already talking...

Re: Rockpool Taran (full size) vs Tiderace Pace 17^
Some more for the list Epic 18x and 18x Sport (the sport is more stable and speed difference is negligible) Taran 16 in the real world just as fast as the 18 and more manoeuvrable Epic 16x I bought one of these when my mate bought a Taran 16. Nothing between them re speed. Epic sails a bit faster an...
