Re: Best Expedition Fast Sea Kayak Options?

Don't take any notice of the 58cm width. That is simply across the deck at it widest point. It's more like 52/53 at the waterline as it curves in very quickly. Initially I found it a little unstable, but my other main boat is a Sirona. Once I got used to it I've found it fine, maybe moderate initial...

Re: Should I get a Valley Sirona RM or a Zegul Arrow Play? (Nuka?)

I've got a Sirona RM and it is my "go to boat" for rockhopping and surf play. I used to have a Zegul Greenland GT which was great and very manoeuvrable but not particularly tough and so not ideal for your use. Unless you get the top spec Arrow Play you'll be in the same situation. Valley do the Siro...

Re: Best Expedition Fast Sea Kayak Options?

I've got the Epic 16x and love it. I paddle it with two friends who both have the Taran 16 and they love theirs. Performance wise there's nothing between them. We also have Flat Earth Sails and these boats are really easy to sail with the rudders. The Epic has loads of storage space and a large cock...

Re: Kayak sail

Expedition Kayaks in Australia now manufacture and sell Flat Earth Sails. I bought mine direct from them, they will also value the package "appropriately" if you ask them. Early last year mine came in at about £300 for the full set.

Re: Scorpio Advice Please -Scudder or Skeg

I've got a number of boats set up for sailing, 2 are skeg only and two are rudder only. For sailing the rudder is way better than a skeg, and a lot less work. I've not used a scudder but Douglas Wilcox wrote a very comprehensive review of the mk2 Scorpio with scudder and sail. https://seakayakphoto....

I'm 5'10 and 185lbs My son is 6'1 and 190 and he fits fine as well. I carry my weight high which is why lowering the seat was good for me.

Re: Valley Sirona 16.1 RM - fit?

Where are you? I've got a Sirona in Somerset you're welcome to try. I also have an Xcite and fit that. I paddle the Sirona a lot more!! I've also got an Aquanaut LV and have paddled an Etain 17.5 and fit all perfectly. I did lower the seat in the Sirona, not for fit, but to lower the centre of gravi...

If you're in Pembrokeshire join the Sea Kayak Cymru facebook page. They're a very active group and a lot of the boats mentioned are owned by members who I'm sure will be only too happy to help, advise and let you try boats.

Re: Play the sea

I've got both L and S Stratos and a Sirona 16.1 (mv) a friend of mine used the Sirona for a week and then bought the LV 15.10 version and loves it.
As for me, much as I like the Stratos I never paddle them now, I'm always in the Sirona

Have a look on Aliexpress for diving lights. I've bought both plastic and metal ones and funnily enough they bear a remarkable resemblance to expensive ones here. £10 will be more than enough for what you want.

I use Viewranger for maps and think i paid about £50 for full 1:50 OS maps. For charts I use Navionics Uk and Ireland which was free! Just remember to put your phone on flight mode so it's not spending all day searching for a signal, wifi and bluetooth devices.

In a nutshell Sea Kayak Award = 3* Sea without a roll. Coastal Sea Kayak Award = 4* Sea skills without the leadership Advanced Sea Kayak Award = 5* Sea skills without the leadership. If you do a leader assessment and pass the skills section but not the leader section you can still get the relevant p...

Re: Arthritis Knees and Hips Is it possible to Roll

Merry Christmas. I also have arthritis in both my feet and have problems maintaining the frog position. Like Douglas I primarily paddle straight legged. I have a variety of boats and can roll all of them with no problems. My expedition boat is an Epic 16X which although a closed deck sea kayak has a...

I've got 2 16ft boats, A Valley Sirona 16.1 rm and an Epic 16x. The Epic has a full 16ft waterline, longer than some 18ft boats. I've regularly paddled both around Ramsey Island and the Epic will leave the Sirona for dead in most conditions, but the hull is based on a surf ski design and built for s...

Hi I'm a member of the Sea Kayak Cymru FB group despite living in Somerset. I joined a few years ago now as a very inexperienced sea paddler and was warmly welcomed. Now I'm a leader/coach myself. Yes the advice to join a club is good and there are a lot of "hardcore" trips now, but that's because t...

Wanted cheapish Tandem Sea Kayak

I've given up ever getting my wife into a single but she's more open to the idea of a tandem. Naturally I don't want to spend a fortune in case it's only ever used once. There are a couple on Ebay - a Point 65 Duo £1000 Looks nice but more than I really want to spend. Prijon Excursion £475 or offers...
