Cardigan sea kayak club
Does anyone have details of the club in Cardigan, I met a couple of paddlers from the club and they suggested I join. Heres some pics from the Ceibwr bay area last week. https://media.ukriversguidebook.co.uk/uploads/62252/1618681481598-5360.png https://media.ukriversguidebook.co.uk/uploads/62252/161...

Re: New boat choices
The Fusion and Katana type kayaks are designed as river kayaks, but work very well as rockhoppers, the point I was making is that such designs do have there place on the sea, depending what you want to do with them, and my guess is that some people who dismiss shorter beamier kayaks like the Stratos...

Re: New boat choices
Just because a kayak has a widish beam does not always mean it is a beginners barge, I agree something like the Carolina will not be suitable for rough windy conditions, it is designed as a flat water tourer and works best in those conditions, but something like the Dagger Stratos, designed with Dag...

Re: New boat choices
Don’t think the 12.5 is out in the UK yet, I had a 14.5 S and really liked it, very comfortable and a great kayak, though I now prefer the Virgo, I would be interested in trying the shorter Stratos as a “pissing about” kayak.

Re: New boat choices
Maybe look at the Dagger Stratos, It has a skeg, and a rockered chined hull that is very agile, which sounds like it could be a handful in windy conditions, but because it is easy to turn, and edge, it actually performs well in wind as long as you have the technique required to control the kayak, go...

Not forgetting Nigel Fosters contribution to sea kayak design with the Vyneck, used to circumnavigate Iceland back in 77.

Re: Best sea kayak to get for Scotland?
I know someone who knew him, apparently he could be “difficult” and had a cutting sense of humour, but was a very good kayaker and instructor and some of his designs are true classics and things of beauty, my first kayak was a P&H Sirius, that was never credited as being one of his, but it was a bas...

Re: How much better is a 14ft over an 11.5ft for going along the coast?
The Skeg is designed to stop the stern getting blown downwind, doesn’t make much difference what length the kayak is, most kayaks will weathercock into wind if designed/loaded correctly, in currents I prefer the skeg up as the kayak is more easily manoeuvred.

When the Lockdown is over you should come to Pembrokeshire for some quality tripping ! I hope to be there as much as possible.

Re: How much better is a 14ft over an 11.5ft for going along the coast?
That virgo is a great looker but them deck bungees really let it down, the layout along with slider placement and hatch looks very much an afterthought. Agree, but not a deal breaker as everything else is spot on (apart from the horrible skudder cover on back deck, does anyone buy kayaks with skudd...

Re: Paddle length, not that old question...
I use a adjustable 205-215 650 Celtic kinetic, used mostly at the short to mid length, I am 186cm
As the previous poster says depends on paddling style, preferences and your strength etc, I used to use a 218 cranked Nordkapp, but would find that way too big and long now.

Re: How much better is a 14ft over an 11.5ft for going along the coast?
Yes the model A, the wheels are about 25cm, it collapses and dismantles so you will get it easily into the rear compartment, the Ekla 200 has slightly smaller wheels that are pneumatic rather than the solid rubber of the Lomo, but is otherwise similar but costs a lot more. When I attach the trolley ...

Re: How much better is a 14ft over an 11.5ft for going along the coast?
Welcome to the elite band of Virgo owners. A Compass, Silva 70 or similar is useful and fills the horrible hole as well, also get a trolley, Lomo do a good one, the Virgo isn’t great to carry as the bow is very long so doesn’t really balance well on the shoulder. Also remember to rinse the gear afte...

Re: How much better is a 14ft over an 11.5ft for going along the coast?
Just to make a point, the Virgo you asked about is a “proper sea kayak” that is well balanced in wind and waves, it just happens to be shorter than the old school convention, not everyone wants or needs a 17/18ft kayak, and I would argue its better to have a shorter more agile boat in many situation...

Re: How much better is a 14ft over an 11.5ft for going along the coast?
I think the leverlock is much better than the 3 hole option, that uses a paddlelock button, the leverlock is very secure and feather is more easily adjustable. I used to have some carbon fibre bladed kinetics, but again prefer the carbon infused Nylon as its more forgiving in Barnacle encrusted cave...

Re: How much better is a 14ft over an 11.5ft for going along the coast?
Just of out interest - what paddles are you using with your Virgo? I have the excellent Celtic Kinetics, I have the 2 piece leverlock version with adjustable feather and length 205-215cm, G1F carbon shaft with 650 size blades in CF nylon (I had to request the CF as wasn’t on website, its a stiff car...

Re: How much better is a 14ft over an 11.5ft for going along the coast?
Absolutely go for the Virgo, will be the better kayak, the Expression is a good kayak for more sheltered waters, but the extra length and the hull design of the Virgo will make a big difference to your paddling options. After owning many kayaks, including serious full on composite sea kayaks, I now ...

Re: Kayaking clothing - does cost = quality?
In my experience, cheap normally means poorer quality, or poor function, and probably made in a sweat shop where people are paid literally peanuts, the advantage you get with established brands like Peak UK and Palm is that the gear has evolved through many years of development, and the designers ar...

Re: P&H Virgo
Also the coastline from Stackpole quay to St Govans head is full of great caves and interesting passages, its quite exposed and best done upper half of tide with low or no swell if you want to get into the caves safely, tide flows can be quite fast at Stackpole head. Big car park and good launch at ...

Still like the Virgo very much, paddled it in a variety of conditions, suits my needs extremely well, I do day trips with lots of caves, nooks and crannies, wouldn’t be the best kayak for fast distance work. https://media.ukriversguidebook.co.uk/uploads/62252/1611771791037-5157.png https://media.ukr...

Re: Flying with a 3 piece sea kayak??
The milk run is a useful flight, or use the Alaska marine highway.
When I have paddled in Alaska I just rented kayaks, most towns have a outfitter, depends how fussy you are on the kayak you paddle, or rent/buy a folder such as Feathercraft K1, easy to stick these in a floatplane for drop offs.

Re: Introduction and looking for advice.
Try the Stratos, its a good kayak (sea kayaks don’t have to be a certain length or beam) a lot of people have them as play the sea boats, and they are forgiving for a newbie, if you get a “proper” sea kayak later you can hang onto the Stratos as a second boat. Yes longer kayaks are “faster” but that...
