Re: high top transit roof rack advise please

I originally had the system that used the gas struts. As you say there is a finite distance it will lower due to rack width v van height. However when lowered down the side of the van I found myself and wife could get 2 kayaks loaded onto it so drop down height wasn't an issue. To load 3 boats would...

Re: Northshore Atlantic - leaking pipe

I have the same atlantic with the strengthening pipe. I found that water was leaking out of the cockpit into the day hatch and the forward one. I assumed it was due to the boat flexing and the bottom of the bulkheads (where the pipe is located) being the leak path. I sealed up the lower join between...

I have one of these LARS racks on my camper van.

Douglas W has one too and he did a review of it about 1.5 years ago. I can't find it. He will post a link to it I am sure when he reads the topic. It may well be on fb

Re: Northshore Atlantic Question if I may?

I have the early model of the RM Atlantic.Basically its thinner plastic with the strengthening bar. I am 100 kg dressed to paddle and with it packed for a few nights trip me plus load would be in region of 125kg. As I understand their figures its an indication of the paddler's weight that suits the ...

Parking recommendations for Shuna and Lismore

I was looking at an overnight trip to these locations and wondered if anyone has ever left vehicle for one or more nights in the car park alongside A828 just north of Portnacroisch /North Dallens GR 929493. I have left car there for a day trip but was wondering about the security of location for ove...

Re: Advice on Clubs on the East Coast of Scotland

North of Aberdeen would indeed be a bit too far, however Stonehaven is perfectly located for me given that it takes a little over 20 minutes for me to get their so here's hoping I can get something sorted for the following year. You're sorted then. It takes me 50 minutes to get to Stonehaven which ...

Re: Advice on Clubs on the East Coast of Scotland

I am a member of the Integrate Group. As stated we do winter pool sessions and in the spring we do run beginner sessions at Stonehaven harbour. Most of our evening trips (April to September) are out of the Stonehaven area (Cove,Catterline etc) with additional weekend trips to north and west coasts. ...

it looks like it only ate the soft parts from the cockpit, seat cover? Don't know what she kept going on about...maybe thought it would talk back to her and she could then engage it in a reasonable conversation.

I just bought one of these a while ago too. My first vhf . I do sometimes think the reception isn't that good...nothing really concrete to base it on except a friend who had a fairly old vhf and he always seemed to get great reception so I was expecting good things from the m73. I do seem to get a l...

I tend to use 1:50 but due to failing eyesight print it out from something like Bing Maps onto A3 or zoomed in on A4 to give me half a chance of being able to read it once its on deck. Should be laminating these but just put them into a large (?A3) Ortlieb I have with usually the day's planned paddl...

We were up in the SI last weekend too. You were right about the fog and good decision made. We had paddled down west side of Isle Ristol and crossed to Eilean Mullagrach and were keeping an eye on it. There seemed to be a bank to landward south direction where you were but it looked to extend way ou...

I use Lomo boots too. I found them to be a tight fit in my RM Atlantic (size 10) but a few minutes on the grinding wheel especially at the heel area and they were so much better in the boat. No longer have that locked in feeling. You can grind a surprising amount of material off, especially the heel...

I too have the plastic version. Have done a 5 day trip loaded with tent (2man) food etc. there is plenty of room in it. I pack with 3 thoughts in mind, I don't want to be cold I don't want to be hungry I don't want to run out of alcohol! so on that basis I do tend to pack a lot. I have paddled the c...

To add to the comments re Lomo boats above. I too have a pair of these but when new found them to result in my feeting getting wedged into my Atlantic RM. Its the one with the strengthening bar so its already a bit limited for moving feet around. Gave the boots a few minutes on the grinder wheel in ...

Loch Lomond Again

In late November I took the opportunity to get out for a day trip here again. It has been a while. Day was fairly cool around 3-5C and for a lot of the time there was quite a bit of mist hanging around the eastern side. I paddled out from where I have launched before at Aldochlay and headed for the ...

Kirsten I have the same type rails on my Subaru. I went with the square bars from Thule and also their fitting kit etc. Figured would be easier to attach J bars securely. VHF Radio Batteries - does size matter

I have been considering purchase of a VHF radio so this is a timely discussion for me. One thing I notice is that there is considerable variation in the battery specs depending on the particular radio. Some are 1150mAh others 2000mAh. Is a larger mAh capacity better - ie will a radio with 2000 last ...

We were out the other day from Sandend on the Moray Coast and saw what we initially thought were dolphins in Cullen Bay. There were about 8-10 of them and some were jumping clear out the water. Have a Freelander 5 door TD4 - 2005. Have carried 2 kayaks on the roof with roof bars no problem. The rails should allow you to fit the bars at reasonable spacing IIRC.
