Re: the "Linn of Dee"

It looks a bit like the River Lui, which would make sense as you can park at the Linn of Dee to walk to it Check out the top of the drop in these pics - https://www.ukriversguidebook.co.uk/rivers/scotland/north-east/photos/river-lui EDIT - I spotted the left / right arrows above to see the rest of ...

I use a Playboater 'big deck' and it's fine! Few years older than the boat though ;)

Re: Your best cock-up (not carnage)

Flew back to Scotland a couple of weeks back with a boat. Found out Edinburgh Airport car hire (having pre-paid) that my driving license expired over a year ago... Got caught out about 10 years ago by massively rising levels on the Upper Dart just as it started getting dark... Got out on the wrong s...

Yep the Verzasca, and Poke has it exactly. I believe this one's called Lucifer's - deceptively gnarly, and just above the cave drop.

I think the Ardez is a deeper/rockier gorge than that. Could it be the middle Sill? If you have any other photos showing the mountains more clearly it might help.

Re: Gd 2-3 in the Oetz area early August

Untere Sill near Innsbruck (one g4 but easy to portage; Ruetz gauge is more relevant as that's the river you actually start on), Loisach near Garmisch (quite technical though), Isar I think is supposed to be easy but pretty, Imster Schlucht on the Inn, I believe the Lech has some easier sections,

Re: Snowpack in Italy and France this year?

Any thoughts on high water options around Verzasca/Val Sesia?

Was thinking about heading over from Tirol this weekend to get back in the habit of drops and higher boofs, but levels atm look a bit more 'boof or die' (or at least beater) than the usual waterpark style...

Tirol is flowing nicely already. No idea about other regions, sorry, other than Sven Lämmler makes Val Sesia look real good about now on Instagram.

Re: Snowpack in Italy and France this year?

Whole Alps are in tip top shape. Western Alps (Chamonix, Verbier) have ridiculously deep snowpacks at altitude, less so lower down. Probably include St Anton/Arlberg region in that. Main Tirol not quite so outrageous ('cos our dumpage happened more November/December then it slowed down a bit whereas...

Immersion Research drysuits

My faithful Palm Torrent (purchased in 2008) finally died last summer, so I need a new drysuit before the kayaking season kicks off again in the spring. For a number of reasons I'm fairly set on an IR suit (probably the Arch Rival), but I will have to order online without checking them out first, so...

[quote=Jim What I am saying is that 'actual whitewater' encompasses a huge amount more than the grade 5+ steep creeks that the currently fashionable creek boats are designed for. I'm all for there being races where ordinary paddlers can turn up with their ordinary boat and have a chance to do well, ...

Re: Nose cones |?

That's kinda the point: they couldn't make something radically specialised, so have to make conventional creek boat designs better* to win. Which stifles actual true innovative design. Ie we're stuck with tiny little iterations of the same tired old designs rather than anything truly creative innov...

Re: Nose cones |?

Nonsense my friend, have you paddled the Waka Tuna which cleaned up a few years back? Fantastic boat to creek with. Have you paddled a Nirvana. Utterly, utterly brilliant boat to paddle. For *some* paddlers. It depends on your paddling style and what you need from a boat. But make no mistake, those...

Re: Nose cones |?

The thing is that the argument Otherwise you'd end up with athletes using incredibly specialised boats that no-one could justify buying for actual whitewater use, like slalom (or the Green boat), completely misses the point - those athletes are getting far more time on the water in their boats than...

Re: Nose cones |?

Corran isn't complaining specifically that some of his boats can't be entered, but that the rules are stifling design innovation in general, stacking the odds in favour of the big companies and their paddlers (who, incidentally can paddle both prototype boats not available to the public in competit...

Re: Starting in a playboat?

I see a very definite trend of people who've learnt in playboats to rely on a much more reactive style with lots of sweepstrokes to adjust course - which you can't get away with so easily in a creek boat - rather than dynamically paddling forwards and using momentum to move through a rapid. It look...
