Re: Dorus Mor

Hi Jim, You could be right ;) ....... always get my ebbs and floods mixed up! It's confusing when the flood/ebb is north south, but the tidal steram, in the Dorus Mor at least, is east/west! Anyway, suffice to say we rode into Loch Craignish on what must have been near slack water, but it was going ...

Dorus Mor

Has anyone 'ridden' the Dorus Mor at springs when it's running full bore? It looked rather awesome last week! We got a quick but mostly smooth ride into Loch Craignish near the end of the flood, but on returning a few hours later the ebb was going full bore and we very trepidatiously crept around th...

Re: Valley Gemini

God forbid, i wouldn't want an ugly plastic beast like that!..... ; Only joking! Thanks Simon, but I already have a glass North Shore. But honestly I was just looking at the profile and they struck me as very similar. However I'm sure the Gemini has special characteristics - and true, it isn't an ug...

Nice. Great if you can pop a tent and sleepy in, I guess (and the wine box...)

The plastic one looks very similar to the North Shore Aspect.

Sucess!!!!! Made in the UK and cheap (under £20) too!!!!! Only downside is no zip. But if enough of us ring up and request zips, then we're happy bunnies. I've done a bit of sewing and a bit of seam splitting and was toasty and comfy and had a sort of fly. Happy as a 1970s sea paddler with new fibr...

Re: Aberystwyth rescue

I'm glad it all ended well without too much drama. The alert by a 'member of the public' is interesting. I wonder if the kayakers managed to phone someone on shore using a mobile? Or maybe they were late returning and a friend or partner alerted the lifeboat? For a moment I had a vision of an Aberys...

Kayaks n'Beer.... Search for reviews, news, youtube videos, through google or one of the lesser search engines and you'll find plenty of material. What's more, none of it (or very little) has been put there by ratbag marketing men, hell bent on pushing sales But it might have been put there by onli...

Meanwhile back at the Valley web site we're still in the Year of the Etain.....they must have been putting ALL their efforts into those twins ;)

A brilliant trip and superb pics from you, Douglas...as always!

By the way, did you scupper the sea-leg back to Bute & Portencross (shown on the map) because of the oncoming front? Looks like the sea got nasty pretty quickly!

Re: Is something wrong at Valley...

Jim, I can fully understand why you rejected the web designer who came with the funding, and how it works better for you to do-it-yourself. If you say you don't need much more than a page with a telephone number and address, then I believe it - it's your business and you know what you need. And that...

Re: The essential part of your kayak..

I second Kate's remark. I'm by no means experienced, but from what experience I do have and the boats I've paddled, the most comfortable knee/thigh combo is still my braceless Skerray. If your footrests are right and the cockpit shape designed well, I see no problem in using the underside of the coc...

Re: Land of Malt Whisky

We arrived in Arisaig on Easter Sunday evening and lay in the tent as the wind rattled and rain drummed on the flysheet - it didn't look good. Surprisingly the next five days turned out rather nice, if cold and breezy. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-w8V2Vrsqpoc/T4wSbGGlUoI/AAAAAAAAA0I/LDRygveEgT...

Well said m-j-b, very well said. I was going to respond myself to this thread, but you've hit the nail on the head, really. A feature of this thread seems to be the brittleness of some of the Valley defenders (I won't call them fans, though they may be). I'm very surprised at the forum admin getting...

Re: Night warning lights

Many thanks for all the replies on this. I can totally see the point of being seen as a, if not the , major consideration. At the moment I'm not paddling in big or confined shipping areas (Scottish west coast), but there are still plenty of ferries and other craft, and plenty of yachts! I have a pow...

Re: Night warning lights

Thanks for replies on this. Seems like an 'all around' white light is the simple answer, although you could embellish it with red lights if you wanted. I think I may start with a Guardian white light, I'd had my eye on those as they seem simple and easy to clip to my hatch straps or PFD. Relatively ...

LOL, had to laugh at Taran's comment!.....but then I'm tight, too, sometimes stupidly so! I've used Wordpress quite a bit and feel it's far more flexible than Blogger. Wordpress will give you 3gb storage free, so should go 3x as far at your mph. Transferring your blog?.... apparently it can be done ...

What lights should a sea kayak display at night? Is there a statutory requirement, or just an adviseable standard? If the latter, waht do people advise?

Re: Solo in Arisaig and Ardnish.

Thanks Mike. I'll check via the almanac link - I've picked up a secondhand VHF (Standard Horizon HX500E) at fleabay, but haven't got the license or been on the course yet. Oddly, I took it down to the local port to 'have a listen', but despite turning the squelch right off and flicking through all t...

Re: Solo in Arisaig and Ardnish.

Hi David, I suppose you can't knock commercial kayaking if it allows more people to experience wilderness in this way - although then it can be argued that it makes it less wild. (That's another discussion, I think!) I just wondered with the email thing whether it was accepted practice around the co...
