Re: new from British Canoeing

Since when was any paddlesports governing body remotely interested in sea kayaking? Apart from squeezing as much money out as they can? Who decided they were the national governing body anyway? They wouldn't exist without affiliated clubs & individual members. Vote with your feet troops and just mak...

Re: Advice for learning to surf a sea kayak

Keep at it, there's no better way to learn boat handling. Accept the fact that you'll get ragdolled occasionally and enjoy it, its a blast!!! With reference to a previous reply, some of us CHOOSE to do it because its great fun. Wee tip for successful sea kayak surfing, be going slightly faster than ...

Re: Drogues for landing in surf?

Best bet is to get out and practice in small surf first. Unless its monstrous, most surf can be dealt with by timing and having the skill set. Its also possible to have great fun too, as per photo below :-)

Re: Werner paddle button jamming

Had a similar problem with a cranked Corryvreckan, a few years old. Discovered that on the female joint the "stop" part had moved vert slightly. Solved by a very careful sanding of the paddle shaft. Wouldn't recommend it with a new one tho

Re: VHF Radio Test Calls

Radio checks are always advisable. However it is never a good idea to transmit within 5metres of another handheld. Some radios are prone to blowing the RX diode in this instance, specifically Cobra Marine

Re: 4* out. 'Paddlesport leader' in.

Dunno what all the fuss is about. I dont understand the fixation with the bits of paper. National Governing bodies aka quangos are as relevant to recreational sea kayaking as Donald Trump is to race relations. Do you really need a piece of paper to prove what your abilities are? The restrictions det...

Northshore Shoreline

Any advice on this kayak gratefully recieved. Initial and secondary stability? Tracking? It's an older version with a bilge pump instead of a day hatch. Whats involved in removing pump and installing a day hatch?

Re: Valley Sirona

Like Allan, I paddled both the RM & composite at the demo day at Largs. The composite version is by far the most responsive kayak I've ever paddled and the RM wasn't far behind. I'd also say that both versions are likely to be very skeg dependent in any sort of conditions other than calm. Both were ...

Re: PLB use

In my local area (North Mayo) a VHF has patchy coverage at best, as for mobile phone signal, almost non existant. I carry a PLB at all times, and its not a last resort at all, in a situation where things can escalate quickly I'd have no hesitation in using it FIRST. It's pretty much the best chance ...

Re: VHF handset help

Also, if you're working to a budget, its tempting to buy cheap. Do not buy a Cobra model, I've had 3 and all failed within a year. Warranty backup in Europe is non existant. Friends have bought them too and had same issues with early failure.

Cheers,
Chris
