30 new canoe clubs in wales ?

Looking at BBC website, apparently 30 new canoe clubs have been formed in Wales to cater for demand from Olympics. It sounds an awful lot to me ??

Re: breakdown of coaches by level

I did manage to get figures from them last year, but only after a freedom of info request & a long wait (longer than the legal requirement with FOI). The figures I obtained did not look right, over 1000 coaches just in the North West. Having given it a lot of thought & realising I would need to cont...

Re: Help for my undergraduate thesis wanted from female coac

Thanks for all your responses so far, some interesting points have been made - keep them coming. I'd appreciate any distribution round clubs etc. the more responses the better info I'll be able to extract. I'd love to comment on the barriers I'd expect to see & the ones that are likely to be faced b...

Re: Pregnant wife V paddling trip. Advice please

Being 29 weeks pregnant at the moment with our second child, I'm happy for him to do day paddles, but it's getting really difficult to do simple things round the house & the hubby is being invaluable, I simply would not manage if he was away for a night never mind a fortninght. The problem with preg...

Help for my undergraduate thesis wanted from female coaches

I would appreciate some help for my undergraduate thesis. I am examining the perceived barriers women may face in becoming or progressing as coaches. The questionnaire is targeted at level 1 or level 2 female paddlesports coaches (both old BCU & BCU UKCC) and has 20 questions, it takes around 6 minu...

Re: disabled paddler needs ideas on how to get back into kayak

Have you tried the roll in entry, lie on your back in the water, put 1 foot into the boat, then keeping very low, roll the body over the boat until facing upright again, slide other leg into cockpit. If you struggle to get that first foot in, you could be in a sitting position in the water & handle ...

UKCC Level 3 involves 3 days core, followed by 3 days CPD (or moderate water endorsement plus 1 day CPD) 2 days disclipline specific, 1 years coaching / experience, then your assessment Basic PYB are offering 2 out of the 3 CPD's in the weeks course, so only 1 other is needed before the disclipline ...

One of the pre requisites will be existing holder of UKCC L2 Or old level 3 with coaching processes I would hope for a transfer pathway so that existing BCU coaches of level 3 and above can directly access the new level 3 training. Re: UKCC for recreational clubs

Of course the simple answer would be to have 3* kayak touring and 3* canoe touring and any suitable skilled assessor could deal with each. After all that's what happens with every other award, why not this one. Simple? BCU? Flying pigs? The 3* touring has been split into either canoe or kayak, info...

Every time some one new to me comes I ask if they've capsized before if they say yes, I get them to demo it on dry land for me with a spraydeck. It's amazing how many of these forget to make sure their loop is out. If they haven't done it before, I talk / demo with one then get them all to do it. Th...

Re: Weight loss and muscle building in kayaking

The gym will certainly increase your muscle size, losing weight is dependent on your body composition, Muscle will put weight on, but if carrying large amounts of fat will assist you in losing this. The important thing you need to decide is exactly what you're after, muscle size does not give you st...

Re: FRST

Training without certification would be the way I'd suggest to go, minimum age is 14 for the certified course.

As long as the provider knew before booking, I suspect most would accept under 14's onto a course provided the participants understood the physical demands of the course.

Re: Coaching - where to start?

There are plenty of grants that clubs can get to pay for courses for volunteer coaches. You just need someone in the club who is willing to put the work in to get the grants. For example just from grant money recently we've had 2 people trained as coach tutors, & ran a L1 course for 12 club coaches,...

It looks like there has been a right turn around at Roman Lakes. I understand that they are planning to build a fish pass up the nasty weir, and they are consulting with canoeists! A far cry from when they thought to bring a dog and a gun to try to pursuade us not to proceed down the river! We've b...

It's the weir below Manchester CC's club site on the Goyt.

It started breaking down the other year when the river was extremley high & has just kept on breaking.
