Re: DW 2012

We did Newbury to Dreadnought yesterday instead of the 'D' because we didnt want to get up at 3.30am. We had a reasonably good run up to Fobney, portaging seemed to be clicking into place and all was well. UNTILL...... we met the killer swan of reading. We didn't see it at first then I spotted 'the ...

Re: DW 2012

Hi I posted a similar question a couple of pages back. the general concensus seemed to be to go for the morning start. the afternoon tide window is only 2 hours, and yes you do need permission from the DW organisers to start after 12noon. We considered starting in the evening but have decided to sta...

Re: DW 2012

Came back from a really good 2 hour night session on the canal yesterday, really motivated. and decided to have a look on utube for some DW inspiration and found this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmPd47QwLOk All I can say is this is what I call dedication. Not just the paddling but the time it m...

Re: DW 2012

Just done Marlowe to penton. Good paddle except for the thick ice in the cut at cookham. We didn't even see it. We crashed into it and slowly rode up over it. It wasn't funny but thankfully we managed to push ourselves backwards back.into the water and then paddled the weir instead.

Re: DW 2012

Can anyone recomend any gloves. We are doing Marlow to chertsey on Sunday and I want to stop my hands freezing. Pogies work fine untill my hands get wet portaging then they never warm up again. Eventually I stop when my fingers feel like they are being hammered.

Re: DW 2012

Can't remember where I got to when I posted them last year, but they now have long/ lat and also a postcode which is close. I would check your sat nav thinks the postcode is similar to google maps http://www.sendspace.com/file/szrwcu . No DW for me this year with tennis elbow and more white water, ...

Thanks for that mike. I would be really interested to know who else is going for the afternoon tide. And with the tide so early you shouldn't finish in the dark

Re: DW 2012

What are peoples thoughts on the tide this year. We are doing about 5.2 mph on the river but that may slow if we are tired. At that speed we will get to the tideway an hour and a half after high tide. It doesn't give much leeway if u do slow or have any problems. Is anyone thinking of starting the e...

Re: DW 2012

Do the 5 fingers have enough grip for muddy conditions in the DW and would they be warm enough bearing in mind it is early april this year and could be very cold. I used a pair of kayak shoes bought from shepperton last year. they didnt get in the way, had anough grip and do not retain water if they...

Re: DW 2012

Ha, so the naughty lock keeper got his time zones mixed up. he seems adamant it was going to be 3am tide at Teddington.
Will have to redo the maths

I reckon most people will be aiming for the morning tide then.

Re: DW 2012

Spoke to one of the DW peeps yesterday as I have to arrange childcare way in advance and was given the following info. Tides are very early morning and late afternoon, 3am Sunday 8th and 4pm Sunday 8th I think, or thereabouts. They will not allow starters before 7am from devizes. working on the basi...

Re: DW2011....

Well how's this for a shocker

High tide next year Sunday 7th April is 3am and 4pm does this mean we will be leaving devizes in the small hours or will they intend for us to aim for the afternoon tide?

Re: DW2011....

well we made it to Hurley where we had to retire as the last two miles had taken an hour due to my partner sustaining a back injury. It was however a comedy of errors from the start. 1/My partner got heatstroke 2/we capsized at the next portage (cured the heatstroke) 3/we snapped a paddle and had to...

Re: DW2011....

Just got back from a paddle on the K&A and have to say there was no weed in sight. We did only do the crofton flight and the tunnel (4 times) but there was no weed to be seen. The water was filthy and very cloudy but not weedy. The tunnel was not the terror I was expecting. I could see the roof of t...

Re: DW2011....

I asked this one on page 9 and someone has helpfully posted a link where you can download maps and ariel photos for each portage.
