Re: 456 incidents, 9 fatalities

If you want a really dangerous sport, search for the MCA report on divers. They seem to have rather a high number of "incidents" (most of which are self-reported, not someone on a cliff with a mobile), and a worringly high fatality rate amongst people who have (presumably) undergone some fairly rig...

Re: Hypothermia revisited

I always carry a large orange survival bag in my BA pocket. When in the water, the bag can be inflated by the wind, pulled over my head and held together under my feet. It keeps spray off me and is very visible. The air lasts about 15 to 20 min before needing to be refilled.Chris I think there migh...

For things like MSR stoves, it's crucial to practise how to separate them into their individual components in the warmth and comfort of ones kitchen so it's far easier to do in the wet, dark and rain. That reminds me of an 'interesting' situation when I bought my new MSR Whisperlight International ...

Re: Pumps. What's the best option?

I have a 12v rule pump and an IP68 box full of AAs... Just supposing I was considering this route, how many AAs do you use in the box? The possibly big downside I can think of is that, in the event of a swim, the boat is upside down and gravity may cause the float switch to activate. I'm thinking t...

I've just received the following from another forum I belong to, it's also suffering from blocked accounts. It may help explain what lies behind the above. This is all due to a 'brute force' hacking attempt on multiple phpBB3 forums around the web. The attempts are coming from a bot programme that a...

Re: Standard Horizon HX851E

Hi Ian I purchased the HX280E rather than the 851E due to the size difference, the 280 is quite a bit smaller but does not have the DSC/GPS functionality, admittedly it doesn't float (but it is tied to me at all times) and it appears that battery life is somewhat better than the 851E with GPS enable...

A couple I'd add: Competency. Leadership without competence is a disaster waiting to happen. Competence is not necessarily measured in years or the number of BCU stars that someone has, it is measured in ability. Note that competency is spelt differently to complacency, and is indeed a different qua...

I've been looking at this thorny subject as well, due to some harebrained plans for next year. Fully waterproof laptop protection doesn't come cheap from what I can see, with Peli doing a range of laptop-sized offerings. The 1470 is big enough for a 13" laptop with charger, allegedly, and comes in a...

I'll be staying in St Ives, but happy to travel anywhere in Cornwall. I'm not to worried about length of trip - 5 miles, 15 miles, whatever. It will just be great to got on the water and work off off the sprouts.

Are you in the area and up for something?

Life is a funny old thing at times, it throws all kinds of curveballs when you don't expect them, or presents opportunities completely unexpectedly. If I ignore windage and speed I can't think of any good reasons why I don't paddle a SOT! But I've got several chums who do and they love them due to their simplicity and ease of use, they're just not for me.

SWSK is a great resource and having been laid up ill these last few days have been re/reading most things kayaking, this included.

A minor point i know, but there's what appears to be a typo in the inset chart on page 111 - "+0400 HW Dorset, -0200 HW Dorset". For Dorset read Dover?
