Re: how to go "over" holes/stoppers in a slalom kayak

No idea if it's official proper technique n all that, but the more edge you have, it'll cut through. So hold on edge, reach beyond the foampile while on edge and pull.

For pure single drop that bugger on the Hepste into the just deep enough plunge pool has to be a contender.
Using google is cheating, but I think its 52 feet?

Re: This vid's stunning...

Goes against the grain for me too. I thought the whole point of dropping waterfalls was that it wasn't just plopping off something and it relied on skill and control. If so, why add 'not getting burned because some other pyrotechnitians have done their job properly' into the mix? Totally different f...

Re: Do we even need a grading system any more?

If one person says they're going to paddle something 3/4 on Saturday and another says they're going for 5 then I have a great idea of the different days that will involve. I'd only consider video scouting if I'd heard the grade was at the top of my comfort zone, why spoil the surprise otherwise. I ...

Re: Do we even need a grading system any more?

The grade gives you an idea which videos to bother watching. I may have just literally spat a little tea there. Splendid. Franky, absolutely... of course I want to hear t'other argument. Good points. I dont agree about the higher grade thing - i feel its the same for all. I guess my point is if you...

...more useful than a video or images? Just did a 15 second google on "Grand Eyvia kayak" and got far more of an idea of the river than from "Grade 3+/4 without any large eddies". C'mon... I need a better argument than these. I'm sporting for a fight. I'll see you outside... Right then, Dave "I've ...

Re: Do we even need a grading system any more?

You have a point, but I think I can tell from the footage that I'd still give it a miss. Whereas if it said "Grade 5", I may thnk it's worth a look. After all I've done some other BC grade 5s so what's the difference?

Do we even need a grading system any more?

As the title says, are river grades now obsolete? 1. Most stuff has been paddled. It's pretty moch all been filmed too. Surely a bit of footage is a way better indicator of a river's character than a grade? 2. Folks are paddling harder and harder. Grade 5 had become so stretched it meaningless. Andl...

Hmm...Ive got a feeling it depends on how much torso rotation the paddler uses. Zero feather needs more if wrists are not flexed.

Re: What degree WW paddle

Blimey Jim, that's detailed! So I've noticed similar to you, having thought I relaxed my grip on my non permanent hand [right for me as I paddle leftie], but you are right – while I do relax the grip it's on the push of the stroke when it's the upper arm – the actual grip placement doesn't change. Y...

Re: What degree WW paddle

Get a broom handle, and mark off different coloured incraments around one end. and a single mark on the other end. Sit on the floor and with the single marked end where the blade would be on your fixed hand, close your eyes and get paddling. Film the end with the coloured incraments on it and watch ...

Re: Left-handed paddlers

I'm a right hander that has always paddled leftie. Started with 90 deg flat faced blades so it's not down to early paddle choice. I *can* paddle right-handed blades, but I'd hateto rely on it as it's my brain that 'forgets' not the technique. I think if I practiced enough, it would soon come though....

Re: Just for fun........

Okay let's analize the risk. Water will be reasonable temp (most year round). At 30 ft into aerated water, risk of injury from flat landing minimal. Deep pool with no big rocks to avoid. The only (and very) significant danger is the drop just below with the super holdy hole. But safety set up and re...

Re: WHAT BOAT!!! For my better half.

Axiom significantly better than the GT then for a beginner / intermediate? It's a good £200 odd more expensive.... can get a new GT for under £500... I admit the Axiom looks a bit more modern in design, but is it worth the difference? (Also a bit worried about unintended tail squirts when not used ...

Small Nomad, you won't get anything better and you will probably pick on up second hand on here.
Agreed...apart from the lack of surfing ability.

My first thought was Axiom too. Or a JK Fun thingy.
