Thanks for that Martin, thats another one off the escape committe club.

Sorry Steve, I appear to have sent you dodgy information. It was quite a few years since we were out there so obviously a lot of explorings been going on since then. Enjoy your trip, its a fantastic country.

Not paddled at this time of year Steve but would question Ecuador as a grade 3 familly destination. most of the rivers out there are probably a grade up on this and and quite commiting.

Just to add my tuppence worth we paddled this at a medium level and after hearing that large parts of the Zanskar were flat we were pleasantly surprised to find it quite continuous though i can only remember about four rapids that would warrant a gd 4 at that level. Something else that may be of hel...

Re: RIVER ERME (Upper Section to Harford Bridge)

Ran this at christmas, the level was a good 2 ft above the 2 photos shown on the guide above. There were 3 trees down one right across the river between the treeline and Harford bridge. Once you see the treeline get out and inspect for timber, things become rather "sporty" and believe me here, stopp...

So if you were going to the upper Dart the weekend after Apwe. you knew there wasn,t enough water, theres no rain forecast, you,d still go and try to paddle it rather than cancel ?

Ecuador. Base yourself in Tena for the warmer easier rivers but you will still run out of grade 3 options quickly.

Parked the van by the footpath at Gidleigh park and walked down to the river then shoulderd the boats for 10 minutes upstream through the field to a gate where the woods start. Upstream the river steepens but unfortunatly is choked by trees. Well worth doing as adds another 1 km of interesting paddl...

I think you make a very good point here. A lot of boats are very specialist in today,s market where as many of the older style boats will perform several tasks. Ive just bought an old h3 after hiring one for my last couple of trips to India, it was comfortable, played well and behaved in the chunkie...

Interesting point about paddlers coming from reasonably privileged backgrounds... never thought about that, but it does seem to have a degree of resonance when I think about it. But if that's the case, why are all paddlers such tight arsed scumbags when it comes to spending money? Because as I said...
